Vietri sul Mare celebrates its patron saint with brass bands, processions, and fireworks over the sea
On June 24th, Vietri sul Mare comes to a standstill to celebrate its patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. In the town that serves as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, in the Province of Salerno (Campania), this event is much more than a religious observance: it is a moment when the ceramics village reaffirms its identity through faith, family memories, and local pride. The festivities are concentrated over two days, June 23rd and 24th, involving the entire town with illuminations, brass band music, and a pyrotechnic finale overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.
The heart of the festival is the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, the Cathedral that dominates the historic center from the highest point of the town. A place of worship has been documented here as early as 1036 under the name of San Giovanni de Staffilo; it became a parish church in the 14th century and underwent several renovations until reaching the late-Renaissance Neapolitan style admired today, with a facade designed in 1617 by the Cava de' Tirreni master Matteo Vitale. The dome, raised at the beginning of the 17th century over the transept crossing, was covered in 1902 with locally produced majolica tiles in green, yellow, and blue: it is the iconic image of Vietri, best viewed from the Piazza Amendola belvedere. The bell tower, standing about 36.5 meters tall over six levels, transitions from a square base to a hexagonal top, also crowned by a small majolica dome.
The eve of the feast belongs to music. The Storico Gran Concerto Bandistico «Antonio Senatore - Città di Vietri sul Mare», conducted by Maestro Aniello Ronca, parades through the streets of the town to musically announce the festival, followed by a concert in Piazza Amendola. It is an authentic Southern Italian band tradition, featuring grand operatic and symphonic repertoires transcribed for wind instruments, performed outdoors under the festive lights: a ritual passed down through generations in Vietri that draws residents from the surrounding hillside hamlets as well.
The patron saint's day begins with liturgical celebrations in the church of Saint John the Baptist. In the evening, after the solemn mass, the procession winds through the streets of the center carrying the statue of the saint, traditionally accompanied by that of Saint Anthony of Padua, with confraternities, the faithful, and the band in tow. The parade moves through narrow alleys, staircases, ceramics workshops, and sudden openings to the sea: this is the moment when the vertical geography of Vietri becomes part of the liturgy, and the community physically occupies its own town.
The finale, expected around midnight, is the pyrotechnic show from the sea: the batteries fired from the stretch of water in front of the marina illuminate the bay and reflect off the coast, visible from the town's main viewpoints and much of the gulf. A popular belief passed down by the elders is linked to the night between June 24th and 25th: the «trave 'e fuoco a mare» (fire beam at sea), a legendary burning beam that supposedly descends into the water, warming the sea and officially opening the bathing season. According to Vietri tradition, one does not swim before Saint John's Day.
Vietri sul Mare is known worldwide for its artistic ceramics, present everywhere in the urban landscape: majolica domes, devotional panels, signs, and decorated steps. During the patronal festival, the workshops in the center remain open until late, and the evening stroll becomes a natural itinerary through squares, panoramic terraces, and alleys. In addition to the main town, the municipal territory includes the hamlets of Marina di Vietri, Raito, Albori, Benincasa, Dragonea, and Molina, all overlooking the same stretch of coast between the Amalfi Coast and the city of Salerno.
Visitors arriving from outside will find this festival to be one of the most genuine opportunities to discover Vietri sul Mare away from the summer tourist circuits: two evenings where the town, its parish, and its band express a coastal identity that remains deeply rooted.
The Municipality of Vietri sul Mare confirmed the well-established format for the 2026 patronal feast: two days, June 23rd and 24th, with illuminations along the main streets of the town. Mayor Giovanni De Simone presented the festivities as a moment of unity, faith, and tradition for the entire community.
On Tuesday, June 23rd, the Storico Gran Concerto Bandistico «Antonio Senatore - Città di Vietri sul Mare», conducted by Maestro Aniello Ronca, announced the feast with a musical parade through the streets starting at 8:00 PM, followed by a concert at 9:00 PM in Piazza Amendola, the belvedere overlooking the majolica dome of the Cathedral.
On Wednesday, June 24th, the patron saint's day, the celebration of Mass in the church of Saint John the Baptist at 7:00 PM preceded the solemn procession of the saints' statues, which began at 8:00 PM and wound through the streets of the town. Around midnight, the traditional fireworks display launched from the sea illuminated the bay, visible from the town's main viewpoints.
Throughout the festivities, the main streets of the town are lit by illuminations. Program released by the Municipal Administration of Vietri sul Mare.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center of Vietri sul Mare (SA), between the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, Piazza Amendola, and the streets of the town. The fireworks show is launched from the sea and is visible from the center's belvederes and the marina promenade.
Participation in all religious and civil events is free. No tickets are required for the band concert, the procession, or the fireworks.
