Every year on December 3rd, the town of Sant'Anastasia comes to a standstill to honor Saint Francis Xavier, its patron saint. Situated at the foot of Mount Somma, the ancient crater of the Vesuvius volcanic complex in the province of Naples, in the heart of Campania, this patronal feast is more than just a religious observance; it is the moment the entire community gathers in the streets and squares of the town center to usher in the Christmas season.
It is a popular, sober, and deeply felt celebration that blends devotion to the missionary saint with the most recognizable elements of Vesuvian festive tradition: festive lights, a brass band, the procession of the statue, and fireworks.
The center of the celebration is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria La Nova, the town's mother church. Built in the 16th century in what is now Piazza Trivio, it has since become the spiritual and social hub of the town. Its 18th-century facade, featuring Ionic columns, a pediment, and neoclassical decorative friezes, is one of the most elegant examples of local architecture. On the exterior wall, one can admire a 1947 mural signed by Vittorio Luigi Torelli, dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier.
In July 2025, the Bishop of the Diocese of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, presided over the solemn illumination of the restored facade, following a project overseen by the parish priest, Father Tommaso Lucania, and supported by local families, volunteers, and artisans. Visitors arriving today for the patronal feast will find the mother church in a renewed state.
The most attended moment is the procession of the patron saint's statue, which in documented editions takes place on December 2nd in the late afternoon, around 4:30 PM. The procession winds through the streets of the center—Via San Francesco Saverio, Piazza Trivio, Via Santa Maria La Nova, Corso Umberto I, Via D'Auria, Via Marconi, Via Michele De Rosa, and Via Roma—accompanied by confraternities, parish communities, and city officials. Upon returning to the church, a Holy Mass is celebrated.
The days leading up to the feast are marked by preparatory Holy Masses, hosted in turn by the parish communities of Madonna dell'Arco, Ponte di Ferro, Sant'Antonio, and San Francesco d'Assisi ai Romani. On December 3rd, the solemn Eucharistic Celebration—scheduled for 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM depending on the year—is presided over by the Bishop of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, and concelebrated by the parish priests of the town's communities.
Saint Francis Xavier, the Jesuit priest and missionary who evangelized the Indies, is commemorated by the Church on December 3rd and is the patron saint of Sant'Anastasia. As parish priest Father Francesco D'Ascoli noted, «for two centuries, Saint Francis Xavier has united the Christian community of this town», fueling a missionary zeal that remains the common thread of the feast's homilies and prayer moments.
The patronal feast is free and open to all citizens; no tickets or reservations are required. The Municipality of Sant'Anastasia supports the festivities every year through patronage and a financial contribution for decorations, the band, and the celebrations. For those visiting the Vesuvius area in December, it is an authentic opportunity to experience Campanian popular religiosity away from the most beaten tourist paths, just a few kilometers from Naples and the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Arco.
The official program for the 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint Francis Xavier in Sant'Anastasia (province of Naples, Campania) has not yet been made public. The Municipality and the Santa Maria La Nova Parish usually communicate the times of the celebrations, the procession route, and side events only in the weeks immediately preceding the anniversary.
Based on documented editions from previous years, the festivities are concentrated in the month of December, around the liturgical memorial of the patron saint, with the procession of the statue on the afternoon of the previous day, the solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the Bishop of Nola in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria La Nova, the lights on Via Roma, the accompaniment of the Adolfo Fedi Brass Band, and the concluding fireworks display.
We recommend checking the final dates and program on the official channels of the Municipality of Sant'Anastasia and the parish before traveling. This entry will be updated as soon as the official announcement is available.
Sant'Anastasia is located a few kilometers east of Naples, at the foot of Mount Somma. By train: The Sant'Anastasia station on the Circumvesuviana (EAV) line is connected to Naples Porta Nolana and Naples Piazza Garibaldi; from the station, the historic center and Piazza Trivio are within walking distance. By car: Take the exits for the Vesuvian area and provincial roads from the Naples ring road (Tangenziale); on the evenings of the procession, several streets in the center (Via Roma, Corso Umberto I, Piazza Trivio) are closed to traffic, so it is advisable to park on the outskirts and continue on foot.
