The patronal feast of Corvara in Alta Badia, blending Ladin faith and the Dolomites

In the heart of Alta Badia, nestled among the peaks of the Dolomites, the Ladin community of Corvara in Badia (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige) celebrates its patron saint every year: Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Heilige Katharina von Alexandrien in German), whose liturgical day falls on November 25th. It is the most deeply rooted religious event in the village, a moment when village life gathers around its church and its roots.
The feast revolves around the Church of Saint Catherine, the oldest sacred site in Corvara. First mentioned in documents in 1347, the small church was consecrated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria in 1452 and again in 1501. It served as the village parish church until 1959, when the new church was built.
The late-Gothic building preserves an artistic heritage of great value: numerous frescoes, including the oldest depiction of the saint, painted on the wall to the left of the entrance, and above all a refined winged altar from 1520, the work of Ruprecht Potsch, a representative of the famous Danube School that marks the transition from late Gothic to the Renaissance. The outer wing of the altar depicts the martyrdom of Saint Catherine. It is the only well-preserved winged altar in the entire Val Badia.
The patronal feast is experienced as both a religious and a popular celebration. The central moment is the Holy Mass in honor of the patron saint, an opportunity for the entire Ladin community of Corvara to come together. In a village deeply tied to its traditions, the Saint Catherine commemoration represents a key piece of local identity, preserved alongside the Ladin language and the valley's customs.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a martyr and a figure highly venerated in Alpine popular devotion, is traditionally the patron saint of students, philosophers, and numerous trades. Her feast day, at the end of November, also symbolically marks the valley's entry into the winter season, as Alta Badia prepares to welcome skiers to the slopes at the foot of the Sassongher.
Participating in the patronal feast of Corvara, or simply visiting the Church of Saint Catherine, means connecting with the authentic soul of this corner of the Dolomites, far from the spotlight of major tourist events. It is an opportunity to learn about the history, art, and spirituality of a small mountain town that has managed to keep its traditions intact.
