The Saint Leonard Horse Ride in Alta Badia, an equestrian parade of the Ladin valleys
The Leonhardiritt, known in Ladin as Rait de San Linert and in Italian as the Cavalcata di San Leonardo, is one of the most cherished and characteristic events in Alta Badia. It takes place in the hamlet of San Leonardo (San Linert), in the municipality of Badia/Abtei, in the province of Bolzano, the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Every year, in early November, the small mountain village becomes a meeting point for Ladin communities, who celebrate their faith and identity with a fascinating equestrian parade.
The festival is dedicated to Saint Leonard of Noblac, a saint who lived around the 6th century and is venerated as the protector of livestock and, in particular, horses. His feast day falls on November 6th, and throughout the Alpine region, it is traditionally linked to the blessing of animals at the end of the agricultural season. In Alta Badia, this devotion is expressed through a solemn horse ride rooted in the farming culture and deep popular religiosity of the Ladin valleys.
The highlight is the festive parade that winds through the village: beautifully adorned Haflinger and Noriker horses, decorated carriages and wagons, brass bands, and groups in traditional costumes from all the Ladin valleys and various locations in South Tyrol. The procession is preceded by a solemn mass and accompanied by band music, creating an atmosphere that combines religious solemnity with popular joy.
Alongside the procession, the event features the Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt Show: three teams compete in medieval-inspired equestrian challenges, vying for the Leonardi Trophy. This show, highly appreciated by the public, evokes the famous South Tyrolean equestrian tournament and adds a competitive and spectacular dimension to the festival.
The festival does not end with the parade. On Saturday evening, the festival tent opens with live Ladin music and local culinary specialties; on Sunday afternoon, the conviviality continues until evening with traditional dishes and musical entertainment. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the cuisine and traditions of Alta Badia in an authentic and festive setting.
Organized by the Alta Badia Tourism Board (Alta Badia Tourismusgenossenschaft), the Leonhardiritt is much more than a tourist attraction: it is a moment of strong cohesion for the Ladin community, which reaffirms its bond with its roots, language, and traditions. For visitors, it represents a rare opportunity to experience Dolomite Alpine folklore up close, amidst horses, traditional costumes, and breathtaking landscapes.
The 26th edition of the Rait de San Linert opens on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 6:00 PM, with the opening of the festival tent featuring live Ladin music and culinary specialties. On Sunday, November 8, the program includes a solemn mass at 9:30 AM, followed by the festive parade at 10:45 AM with horses, decorated carriages, brass bands, and groups in traditional costumes from all the Ladin valleys and South Tyrol. In the afternoon, at 1:30 PM, the Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt Show takes place, with three teams competing for the Leonardi Trophy. The festivities continue until evening with traditional cuisine and musical entertainment.
San Leonardo/San Linert is a hamlet of Badia/Abtei, in Val Badia (province of Bolzano). By car, it can be reached via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria), continuing towards Val Badia. During the event, it is recommended to use the parking lots in Pedraces or Sponata, with a taxi service available to San Linert.
