Mountain Christmas: The mountain spirit in Selva di Val Gardena

In the heart of the Dolomites, at an altitude of 1,550 meters at the foot of the majestic Sella Group, the town of Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein in Gröden), in the province of Bolzano in Trentino-Alto Adige, hosts Mountain Christmas every winter, a market known in Ladin as "Nadel da mont". The event unfolds in the town center, from Piazza Nives to the parish church, transforming the highest ski resort in Val Gardena into an open-air Christmas village.

A market with the soul of the ski slopes

What makes Mountain Christmas unique is its deep connection to the valley's skiing tradition. Above the huts and the market stalls runs a decorated cable car, consisting of small wooden cabins, adorned and illuminated, that glide through the air like a miniature funicular. A long string of lights crosses the center, while the wooden huts recreate the atmosphere of an authentic mountain village, warmed by the scent of mulled wine and spiced hot apple juice.

Crafts, flavors, and Ladin traditions

Among the market stalls, you will find South Tyrolean and Ladin handicrafts: hand-carved wooden nativity scenes, Christmas decorations, pine-scented cushions, wool socks, and handmade gift ideas. The culinary offerings feature typical mountain specialties, Christmas sweets, and hot drinks, in a setting that blends the Ladin culture of Val Gardena with Tyrolean hospitality.

The snow sculpture competition

One of the most anticipated events is the snow sculpture competition, which brings the market to life with thematic artistic creations carved directly in the town center. The works, shaped in the snow by sculptors, remain on public display for the duration of the event and are awarded during a dedicated ceremony.

Mountain Christmas is part of the Val Gardena Christmas Valley, a circuit that brings together the Christmas markets of the valley's three main towns: Selva, Santa Cristina, and Ortisei (Christmas Village). It is an itinerary that allows you to experience Advent in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, moving from one village to another to discover different atmospheres, lights, and traditions.
