The patronal feast of Salento in honor of Saint Caesarius, Deacon and Martyr, in the heart of San Cesario di Lecce

In the heart of Salento, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital of Lecce, the town of San Cesario di Lecce celebrates its patron saint, Saint Caesarius, Deacon and Martyr (of Terracina), every summer with what locals affectionately call the festa ranne, or "the big feast." It is the most anticipated event of the year, a time when the entire community unites in devotion to its patron and fills the streets of the historic center.
The festival has its roots in 1724, when a member of the Marulli ducal family, then lords of the town, brought a relic of the saint to San Cesario di Lecce. Since that year, the tradition has commemorated the translation of the sacred relic from the Ducal Palace to the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the spiritual heart of the village. The bond between the town and its patron is so strong that the town's very name echoes that of the saint.
The festivities traditionally span three days: the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of the fourth week of July. The religious program, managed by the parish, includes the novena in the nine days preceding the event, with daily liturgical celebrations, culminating in a solemn mass officiated at the Mother Church in the presence of civil and religious authorities. On Sunday afternoon, the silver statue of the saint and the reliquary are carried in procession through the main streets, accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and musical bands.
Alongside the sacred rites, the civil program transforms San Cesario di Lecce into an open-air stage. The famous Salento artistic illuminations light up the historic center, while renowned concert bands—an authentic symbol of the Apulian musical tradition—perform in the square. The event also features shows, folklore, craft stalls, local product stands, and the final fireworks display that concludes the festival. Everything is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee, which publishes the program of religious and civil events each year.
Devotion to Saint Caesarius does not end with the summer festival. On November 7th, the saint's martyrdom is commemorated with religious services, while on February 20th, the feast of the patronage lights up the neighborhoods with traditional fòcare, large bonfires that warm the Salento winter. However, the July patronal feast remains the most solemn and well-attended moment, drawing emigrants, visitors, and curious onlookers from across the province of Lecce and all of Puglia to San Cesario di Lecce.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Caesarius the Martyr returns in 2026 to San Cesario di Lecce, in the province of Lecce, to honor the patron Saint Caesarius, Deacon and Martyr. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the Patronal Feast Committee: the festival traditionally takes place on the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday of the fourth week of July, with the main day being the fourth Sunday of the month.
The program, once announced, will follow the usual structure: the preparatory novena, the solemn mass in the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the afternoon procession of the silver statue and reliquary accompanied by confraternities and bands, and on the civil side, the Salento illuminations, brass band concerts in the square, and fireworks. For final dates and programs, please refer to the official channels of the Patronal Feast Committee of San Cesario di Lecce.
