Perched at an altitude of 878 meters on the western slopes of the Majella massif, in the heart of the Majella National Park, the village of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella (Pescara province, Abruzzo) experiences its most intense moment of the year on August 24th, the day the patronal feast in honor of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle and Saint Euphemia is celebrated. It is the most important occasion on the village calendar, as it unites the community's two patron saints on the same day.

A day marked by tradition

The morning festivities are announced by fireworks and the sound of the brass band, followed by the solemn rite of Holy Mass in the Church of Saint Bartholomew. In the afternoon, the most anticipated moment takes place: the procession, during which the statues of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Euphemia are carried on shoulders through the village streets. The emotion is palpable every year, as this is the time when emigrants who have returned home for the summer take turns with local residents to carry the saints—a gesture that renews the deep bond between the village and its community scattered across the world. In the evening, the festivities continue with music and the traditional "ballo della pupa" (dance of the puppet).

A village of faith and mountains

The parish church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, built in a neo-Romanesque style with its tripartite stone facade and square bell tower, guards the village's centuries-old devotion. Not far away lies the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, a place of pilgrimage nestled in the valley's rock and linked to the figure of Saint Peter Celestine, a testament to the spiritual vocation of this corner of Abruzzo. The patronal feast is therefore also an opportunity to rediscover a territory of great natural value, among the trails of the Majella, the "Daniela Brescia" botanical garden, and the pastoral traditions that still characterize the municipality today.
