Faith, illuminations, and the grand fireworks challenge in the heart of Irpinia

The Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Lucy is the most cherished event in Montefalcione, a hilltop town in the province of Avellino, nestled in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania. Tradition traces this devotion back to June 1688, when a violent earthquake struck the area but miraculously spared the village. The community interpreted this as the protection of Saint Anthony, who has since been venerated as patron alongside Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr. In 1988, for the third centenary, the Mother Church was elevated to a Sanctuary, confirming how deeply rooted this history remains in the village's identity.
The devotional calendar begins around mid-August with the Solemnity of the Assumption and the traditional morning procession to the cemetery, continuing in the following days with processions through the districts and countryside, taking the statues outside the town center among vineyards and scattered houses. In the days immediately preceding the votive feast, the preparatory triduum in honor of Saint Anthony is celebrated, while the highlight is the Solemn Mass, often presided over by the Archbishop, followed in the late afternoon by the solemn procession through the town streets, accompanied by brass bands. The following day is dedicated to Saint Lucy, with similar celebrations and a second procession.
This is the event that has made Montefalcione famous far beyond the borders of Irpinia. On the final evening of the festivities, four pyrotechnic firms from Campania and Sicily compete one after another until late at night, each presenting their own fireworks display. The verdict is also entrusted to the popular vote of the audience, and the awarding of the 'Città di Montefalcione' Trophy is followed by a grand final pyromusical show. For the occasion, the town fills with enthusiasts and curious visitors from all over the region: a true secular liturgy of light that complements the religious one.
Montefalcione's bond with the festival of light has ancient roots. Local chronicles recall that as early as the 1830s, hot air balloons were launched during the festivities, and that among the now-disappeared spectacles was the famous Flight of the Angel. It should be remembered that electricity only reached the village on Christmas Eve 1927: this explains why the artistic illuminations, mounted along the main streets and lit every evening, are still experienced today as a gesture of gratitude and offering, rather than mere decoration.
Alongside the religious program, the committee organizes a rich civil schedule every year that enlivens the town's squares and streets:
Montefalcione has just over three thousand inhabitants and is located a short distance from Avellino, in a hilly area that is also a land of great wines: we are just a few kilometers from the production zones of Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, and Taurasi. Visiting the village during the festivities means combining the discovery of a charming historic center, the Sanctuary, and its traditions with a food and wine stop among the cellars of Irpinia.
The feast is managed by the Montefalcione Feast Committee, based in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, which publishes the complete program every year on its website and social media channels, in collaboration with the parish and the Municipality of Montefalcione.
For the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Lucy in Montefalcione, in the province of Avellino, no official dates have yet been published by the Montefalcione Feast Committee: the organization's website indicates that the calendar is being updated and no detailed program has been released.
Tradition places the festivities in the second half of August, with the highlight on the last Sunday of the month and the fireworks competition in the days immediately following. Pending official confirmation, we do not report dates or presumed appointments: the information will be updated as soon as the committee publishes the calendar and the civil and religious program.
Those wishing to plan their visit can in the meantime consult the official website of the committee and the dedicated social pages, where the poster, the times of the processions, and the list of competing pyrotechnic firms are released every year.
By car: from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Est exit, then the SS7 towards Montefalcione (about 15 km from Avellino). By train: Avellino station, then AIR Campania bus lines to Montefalcione. Nearest airport: Naples-Capodichino, about 60 km away.
The events take place in the squares and streets of the town and are free to access. Only purchases at food stalls and any private initiatives are subject to payment.
