About Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast

Every year in mid-July, Montefalcone di Val Fortore gathers around its patron saint: Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In the highest municipality in the province of Benevento, at over 800 meters above sea level, the solemn day is July 16th, while celebrations at the Sanctuary take place from July 15th to 17th. The most anticipated moment is the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the village streets, a feast that brings families who emigrated from the Fortore area back home.

The patron saint of a mountain village

At 842 meters above sea level, Montefalcone di Val Fortore is the highest municipality in the province of Benevento: a stone balcony overlooking the Fortore valley, the river that rises in this very territory, on the extreme eastern border of Campania towards Puglia and Molise. Here, every year in mid-July, the community gathers around its patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in a celebration that is simultaneously a religious rite, a civic event, and a homecoming.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The heart of the devotion is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, located just outside the town and connected to it by a tree-lined avenue. Its history began in 1604, when some faithful funded a modest chapel to venerate the image of the Virgin. In 1903, Abbot Antonio Altobelli promoted the coronation of the Madonna, and from that moment, the chapel took the title of sanctuary. Between 1920 and 1954, Abbot Antonio Petrilli, whose remains rest in the church, expanded and decorated the building, improved the access road, and founded the Institute of the Carmelite Sisters: the congregation obtained diocesan approval in 1934 and was affiliated with the Order of Discalced Carmelites in 1951. In 2003-2004, the centenary of the coronation and the fourth centenary of the foundation drew extraordinary participation. The sanctuary, now in the diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia and cared for by the Carmelite nuns, remains a pilgrimage destination during the feast days.

July 16th, the day of the feast

The official municipal website indicates July 16th as the date of the patronal feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, coinciding with the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. Celebrations at the sanctuary are spread over three days, from July 15th to 17th. The most anticipated moment is the procession: the statue of the Madonna is carried through the streets of the village, among the stone houses of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful and families returning from abroad or Northern Italy specifically for the occasion. Encyclopedic sources also mention the figure of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on June 25th, but it is the Carmel feast that marks the great summer festival of the town.

A people's feast, beyond the liturgy

As in all patronal feasts of the Fortore area, the religious aspect is accompanied by a civic one, organized by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco Montefalcone di Val Fortore APS. Past editions have featured open-air evening shows in Largo Monumento, with free admission: in 2011, for example, the square hosted a show orchestra with the participation of the Neapolitan actor and comedian Biagio Izzo. The civic program changes from year to year and is released just a few days before the feast, often only via posters displayed in town and a few posts on local social media channels: those who want to be sure of the times should ask directly on-site.

What to see in Montefalcone di Val Fortore

  • The historic center: alleys and stone houses of the ancient Mons Falconis, which in 1439 hosted King Alfonso of Aragon and took its current name in 1863.
  • Museum of Peasant Civilization - Fortore Area (1982): tools, furnishings, and memories of the Apennine rural world.
  • Civic Museum (2004): paleontological and archaeological finds from local excavations.
  • The folk group, active since 1932, which preserves traditional costumes in black, red, and white colors embellished with elaborate embroidery.
  • The springs of the Fortore and the windy ridges that have hosted one of the first wind farms in the Sannio region since the mid-nineties.

A defining identity event

In a municipality of just over 1,200 inhabitants, the Carmel feast is much more than a calendar date: it is the day when the town fills up again, houses reopen their shutters, and generations reunite. Those arriving from outside find a Campania different from the one on postcards: Apennine mountains, fresh air even in July, home-cooked tables, and a Marian devotion rooted for over four centuries, at the highest point of the province of Benevento.

The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel took place in mid-July in Montefalcone di Val Fortore: the municipal website indicated July 16th, a Thursday this year, as the solemn day, while celebrations at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel were spread between the 15th and 17th.

In 2026, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel fell in the heart of the Montefalcone summer: July 16th, a Thursday, the day indicated by the Municipality of Montefalcone di Val Fortore as the date of the patronal feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Celebrations were concentrated around that date at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a pilgrimage destination from July 15th to 17th.

At over 800 meters above sea level, in the highest municipality in the province of Benevento, the feast maintained its traditional structure: services at the sanctuary, the procession of the statue through the village streets, and the meeting between those who stayed and those who returned for a few days from the North or abroad. The civic program, organized by the Municipality with the Pro Loco Montefalcone di Val Fortore APS, was not released online: as often happens in the small towns of the Fortore area, communication was entrusted to posters displayed in town and local social media channels.
