Devotion, brass bands, and fireworks over the sea in the seaside village of Vietri sul Mare
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Marina di Vietri is the seaside district of the municipality of Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno, Campania: a handful of houses nestled between the beach, the two sea stacks, and the cliffs that mark the start of the Amalfi Coast. Every summer, the community gathers here for its patronal feast, dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola and Saint Anthony of Padua, the town's co-patrons. This is not a manufactured tourist event; it is a true neighborhood celebration, organized by the Santa Maria di Portosalvo Parish together with local residents, which is exactly why it retains an authentic atmosphere rarely found by those just passing through the Amalfi Coast.
Saint Francis of Paola, protector of seafarers, and Saint Anthony of Padua are venerated together by the village. The Calabrian saint's liturgical feast falls on April 2nd, when a procession takes place in Marina di Vietri along Via Contorno and returns via Via Strettola, managed by the parish and the association of statue bearers. However, the two saints are celebrated together during the central week of August, when the village is bustling with vacationers and locals who have returned for the summer. The village's two churches, the Church of Saint Francis and the Church of Saint Anthony, alternate as the focal points of the festivities.
The traditional schedule, confirmed for the 2025 edition, spans two main days followed by a long octave of celebrations. The eve begins in the late afternoon with the Gran Concerto Bandistico Cittร di Vietri sul Mare parading through the village streets, while the Rosary is recited and the Eucharist is celebrated in the church. In the evening, the band performs its concert in Piazza Don Attilio Della Porta, the heart of the village's social life.
The procession is the most attended moment: hymns, prayers, and decorated balconies accompany the statues along a route that touches the seafront and the inner alleys, with the sea always just a few meters away.
In the following days, the festival does not fade but changes its tone: for the entire week, the octave is celebrated, with Masses in the morning and evening at the Church of Saint Francis, preceded by the Rosary and followed by prayers to the saints. The following Sunday closes the cycle with final celebrations and a short procession that returns the statue of Saint Anthony from the Church of Saint Francis to the Church of Saint Anthony: a simple, almost domestic gesture that marks the end of the village's devotional summer.
A moment that distinguishes this festival from many other patronal feasts in Campania is the laying of a wreath at sea in memory of the victims of the 1954 flood, the catastrophe that severely struck Vietri sul Mare, Salerno, and neighboring towns. The ceremony on the beach, sober and deeply felt, serves as a reminder that here the sea is both a resource and a wound, giving the festival a civic dimension alongside the religious one.
Vietri sul Mare is known worldwide as the city of ceramics: the workshops in the upper town, the majolica-tiled domes, and the famous painted donkeys are part of the municipality's identity. Marina di Vietri is its seaside face, with its beach, small harbor, and view of the two sea stacks. Participating in the patronal feast means seeing the town from the inside, away from the most crowded circuits of the Amalfi Coast, in one of the few occasions when the village reveals its true self.
As of the writing of this guide, the program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. Dates and events are usually announced by the Santa Maria di Portosalvo Parish and local channels a few weeks before the festival. Those wishing to attend should refer to the traditional August timeframe and check parish notices and posters displayed in the village.
The feast in honor of Saint Francis of Paola and Saint Anthony of Padua returns to the seaside village of Marina di Vietri, a district of the municipality of Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno. For 2026, neither dates nor the program have been published yet: this page will be updated as soon as the parish releases the official calendar.
Those familiar with the festival know what to expect: the parade of the Gran Concerto Bandistico Cittร di Vietri sul Mare through the village streets, Eucharistic celebrations in the two churches, the solemn procession with the statues of the patrons along the seafront and alleys, nighttime fireworks over the sea, and the octave of celebrations that extends the festival for the entire following week.
All events take place outdoors or in the village churches and are free to attend.
By car: Take the Vietri sul Mare exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, then follow the SS163 Amalfitana road. Parking in the village is very limited during the festival; it is better to leave your car in the parking lots of Vietri or Salerno.
By train: Salerno station, served by Frecce and Intercity trains, is about 4 km away. From there, urban and interurban buses run to Vietri and the Marina.
By sea: During the summer months, Marina di Vietri and Salerno are connected to the main ports of the Amalfi Coast by ferry services.
