The patronal feast of Zapponeta, blending faith, artistic illuminations, and concerts by the sea
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, in the heart of September, the small seaside village of Zapponeta, in the province of Foggia, pauses to pay homage to its patron saint, Maria Santissima della Misericordia. This is the most important and well-attended event on the local calendar: for a few days, the streets of the historic center and the seafront are filled with artistic lights, music, the aroma of Apulian cuisine, and that sense of community that only a village festival can create. Spirituality, cultural identity, and conviviality intertwine in an event that draws families, young people, and visitors from across the Capitanata region.
The religious core of the festival is the procession of the statue of the Madonna della Misericordia, carried through the town streets and accompanied by the faithful, local confraternities, and sacred music. The procession is complemented by solemn services and moments of prayer that mark the days, in a rite passed down through generations that serves as a symbol of protection and intercession for the entire Zapponeta community.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the patronal feast offers a rich secular program. The evenings come alive with free concerts in the square, which in recent years have brought prominent national artists to Zapponeta, ranging from singer-songwriters to pop and jazz musicians. There is no shortage of artistic light displays, performances, and the traditional final fireworks show, which illuminates the sky over the Adriatic Sea, providing the most anticipated moment of the festival.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover local flavors: along the village streets, markets and food stalls are set up, offering typical local products, from fresh Adriatic fish to the specialties of Daunian cuisine. Strolling among the stalls, beneath the artistic lights, is an integral part of the experience of this festival, which unites Zapponeta's maritime vocation with the rural roots of Puglia.
Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. As per tradition, the schedule of religious and secular events is released by the parish and the Municipality of Zapponeta in the weeks leading up to the festival, usually in the first half of September. It is worth keeping an eye on the official municipal channels to stay informed about the procession, concerts, and fireworks display.
