About Saint Sophia Feast

Every year in mid-May, Albanella gathers around its patron saint with solemn celebrations in honor of Saint Sophia, widow and martyr. In the heart of the Sele Plain, at the gateway to the Cilento region in the province of Salerno, the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Sophia becomes the center of village life for ten days: evening novenas, solemn masses, votive offerings accompanied by a brass band, and the May 15th procession through the streets. In the evening, the square in front of the sanctuary comes alive with musical performances, fireworks, and the traditional lottery drawing.

A patronal festival in the heart of Cilento

In Albanella, a town in the province of Salerno known as the city of olive trees, the most heartfelt event of the year is dedicated to Saint Sophia, widow and martyr, the town's patron saint, celebrated on May 15th. For ten days, the village overlooking the Sele Plain, at the gates of Cilento, hosts a busy calendar of religious and civic events that engage the entire community. It is one of the most attended patronal traditions in this corner of Campania, drawing back many former residents who return home specifically for the feast.

The Sanctuary of Saint Sophia

The heart of the festivities is the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Sophia, a church located outside the town center along the road descending toward the plain. It was already mentioned in a 1687 episcopal report, when it was little more than a rural chapel with a stone altar. The current building features three naves, a transept, an apse, and a Byzantine-style dome; in 2009, by decree of Bishop Rocco Favale, it was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary. Its history is also linked to the memory of the so-called miracle of the manna, documented by a notary act from the early 19th century and commemorated every year on March 8th and 9th, in an event distinct from but complementary to the May festival.

The novena and religious celebrations

The religious aspect marks the entire festival period, beginning with the novena, nine days of evening prayer at the sanctuary that prepare for the patronal solemnity.

  • Novena: every evening at the Sanctuary of Saint Sophia, mass and community prayer.
  • Confirmations: in the days leading up to May 15th, the celebration for confirmands presided over by the diocesan bishop.
  • May 15th, Solemnity of Saint Sophia: solemn masses throughout the day and, in the late afternoon, the procession of the patron saint's statue through the town streets.
  • Votive offerings (Cente): in the morning, the welcoming of the traditional votive candles carried by the faithful, accompanied by a brass band concert, is one of the most characteristic and photographed moments of the festival.
  • Anniversary of the consecration: the final day commemorates the dedication of the sanctuary with a mass.

The civic program: music, games, and fireworks

Alongside the devotion, the festival committee builds a civic program every year designed for all ages. The square in front of the sanctuary transforms into a large open-air venue hosting concerts, showcases, and dance evenings with artists from the Campanian and national music scene; recent editions have featured folk music performances and DJ sets. The fireworks display following the procession and the Saint Sophia lottery drawing, followed with anticipation by the whole town, are unmissable.

The Saint Sophia Games, organized by the Albanella Youth Forum at the sports area, deserve a special mention: two afternoons of games, competitions, and entertainment that involve the community's children and teenagers and have become one of the most anticipated events on the calendar.

Who organizes it

The solemn festivities are managed by the Insieme per Santa Sofia Festival Committee, representing the San Matteo Apostolo parish led by Father Carlo Ciocca, with the presidency of Stefania Lettieri and the patronage of the Municipality of Albanella. The committee's work is supported by the youth group, the true organizational engine of the evenings, along with the Youth Forum for the recreational and sports aspects.

Why it's worth it

The Saint Sophia festival is an excellent way to discover the Cilento hinterland away from the most beaten tourist paths: here there are no large stages or tickets to buy, but a community coming together, the scent of sweet and nougat stalls, the illuminations decorating the town center, and a procession crossing the village at sunset. Visitors will find the landscapes of the Sele Plain, the olive groves that give Albanella its name, and, just further south, the Cilento National Park with its villages and beaches, all just a few kilometers away.

Saint Sophia Feast — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Albanella patronal festival concluded with two highly attended evenings. On Friday, May 15th, the solemnity of Saint Sophia, the community gathered at the sanctuary and accompanied the patron saint's procession through the town streets despite uncertain weather; in the evening, the lottery numbers dedicated to the saint were drawn. On Saturday, May 16th, the festival concluded with a concert by I Tequila e Montepulciano Band.

Saint Sophia 2026: two evenings of great participation

In 2026, the Insieme per Santa Sofia Festival Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Albanella, organized the solemn festivities in honor of the patron saint. The first evening, Friday, May 15th, opened with enthusiasm: a large crowd took part in the events at the sanctuary and the solemn procession of the statue through the town streets, which took place regularly despite the uncertain weather, a sign of the devotion with which the community experiences this anniversary.

During the evening, the Saint Sophia lottery drawing took place, one of the most anticipated moments for the people of Albanella. Saturday, May 16th, the closing was entrusted to music, with the concert of I Tequila e Montepulciano Band in the square: an evening of fun, music, and dance that also attracted audiences from the neighboring municipalities of the Sele Plain and Cilento.

The work of the festival committee's youth group was highly appreciated, identified as the true organizational engine of the 2026 edition and a key player in promoting the festivities.
