The river of fire on Christmas Eve in Agnone
The 'Ndocciata di Agnone is the most imposing Christmas tradition linked to fire known in the world, recognized in 2011 as "Patrimonio d'Italia per la Tradizione" (Italy's Heritage for Tradition). The 'ndocce โ a dialect term for large torches โ are made from the white fir from the Montecastelbarone woods, north of Agnone: the trunks are stripped of bark, cut into strips about a meter and a half high, tied in bundles, and enriched inside with dry broom that crackles as it burns. They take on the characteristic fan shape and can reach several meters in height, composed of an even number of fires, from two up to over twenty.
The 'Ndocciata della Tradizione on December 24th is the most intimate and historically rooted version of the event, distinct from the grand 'Ndocciata on December 13th. At 6:00 PM, the 'ndocciatori (torch bearers) from Agnone's districts parade along the main street carrying the torches on their shoulders, forming a long river of fire to the gathering point where the 'ndocce feed the great "Brotherhood Bonfire". The event is preceded by the Living Nativity scene curated by the Cenacolo Culturale Francescano, one of the longest-running in Molise.
The ritual dates back to pre-Christian times, to the cults of the winter solstice and the customs of the Samnites, who used the 'ndocce to illuminate their night travels. Fire, always a purifying element, later became a symbol of the light of Christ. The 'Ndocciata della Tradizione closes the "month of fire" which makes Agnone, in the province of Isernia, the Molise capital of fire rituals.
The 'Ndocciata della Tradizione 2026 takes place on the evening of December 24th in Agnone. The 'ndocciatori from the districts parade along the main street carrying the large fan-shaped white fir torches on their shoulders, creating the characteristic river of fire. The event, the most intimate and historically rooted version of the great 'Ndocciata, closes the "month of fire" and follows the Living Nativity scene curated by the Cenacolo Culturale Francescano.
Agnone is located in Alto Molise, in the province of Isernia, reachable by car via the SS86 Istonia. The nearest train station is Isernia, from which you can continue by bus or car (about 45 km).
The event takes place on the evening of December 24th in harsh mountain weather: wear very warm clothing. Position yourself along the main street to enjoy the passage of the 'ndocce and maintain a safe distance from the flames. Free admission.
