On April 23rd, Sassuolo celebrates its patron saint with faith, tradition, and a square dedicated to families
April 23rd is a date that matters more than any other in Sassuolo: it is the day of Saint George the Martyr, patron saint of the city in the ceramic district of the Province of Modena, in Emilia-Romagna. An occasion that intertwines the religious dimension with the community one, and which in recent years the Municipality of Sassuolo has chosen to relaunch by transforming it into a true village festival, capable of attracting families, children, and citizens of all ages to the center.
The devotion to Saint George in Sassuolo has its roots in the medieval period. The knight facing the dragon, a symbol of the struggle of good against evil adopted by chivalry as an ideal emblem, is depicted in the stained-glass window above the main entrance of the Cathedral of Saint George, the city's main church. The current building, a rare example of the late Baroque style, was erected around 1760 based on a design by the Venetian architect Pietro Bezzi, replacing an older church dating back to the late thirteenth century. It was precisely at that time, with the beginning of the Este lordship over Sassuolo, that the church was dedicated to the Martyr Saint George, protector of Ferrara, capital and cradle of the Este dynasty.
The festival opens in the morning with the solemn Holy Mass in the Cathedral, the central moment of the city's devotion. Immediately after the religious celebration, the heart of the day moves to Piazza Garibaldi, which for the occasion is set up as a large open-air stage designed for children and their families.
The municipal administration, in collaboration with the Sassuololtre association, structures the day as a large, widespread workshop where, in the words of the organizers, "history and play merge". Among the offerings: educational and creative workshops, face painting stations, knight-themed archery and historical fencing practice, a treasure hunt through the historic center's sights, rediscovery of traditional games, and a photo booth with instant editing to take home a souvenir of the day.
The Patron Saint George Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Sassuolo, a city known worldwide for its ceramics but also rich in history and traditions. A family-friendly, free festival in the heart of the historic center, which tells the identity of an Emilian community around the figure of its knight saint.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, Sassuolo celebrated its patron saint Saint George with a day of festivities in the historic center. The morning began with the solemn Holy Mass in the Cathedral at 9:30 AM, a moment of devotion for the Sassuolo community.
Immediately after, Piazza Garibaldi became the vibrant heart of the festival with the initiative "Saint George to experience for the little ones", designed for children and families. As recalled by Mayor Matteo Mesini, the goal was to celebrate the patron saint "as he deserves: with Holy Mass in the morning and then everyone in the square for a community celebration".
In Piazza Garibaldi, transformed into an open-air educational workshop:
