The weekend celebrating Modena's UNESCO site: Cathedral, Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande
Promoted by the Municipality of Modena through the World Heritage Office, the event Modena World Heritage Festival annually celebrates the complex of the Cathedral, the Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997. For an entire weekend, the historic center of the Emilia capital transforms into a widespread stage, with a program that intertwines visual suggestions, words, music, and insights dedicated to one of the greatest masterpieces of European Romanesque architecture, created by architect Lanfranco and sculptor Wiligelmo.
The most anticipated moment is the grand videomapping show projected onto the Ghirlandina Tower in Piazza Torre: Modena's symbolic tower becomes a canvas of light and sound that retraces centuries of history and the work of master builders in just a few minutes. The evening projections, with free admission, attract thousands of people each year and represent the festival's calling card.
Alongside the light show, the program offers themed guided tours by reservation, special openings of monuments and cultural institutions, readings and musical moments, as well as workshops for children and families designed to introduce the youngest to the city's heritage. The tours guide participants to discover the artistic treasures of the Cathedral and allow them to observe the medieval city from the top of the Ghirlandina and from unusual viewpoints.
The event is part of the cultural programming of the Municipality of Modena, in the province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna), and dialogues with the city's recognition as a UNESCO Creative City for Media Arts. Visiting the festival means entering the heart of Piazza Grande, admiring Wiligelmo's sculptures on the Cathedral's facade, and being amazed by the illuminated Ghirlandina: an opportunity to experience heritage not as a static museum, but as a living space shared by the Modenese community.
The event Modena World Heritage Festival returns in 2026 from October 2nd to 4th, according to the event calendar released by the Municipality of Modena. This year again, the weekend will be dedicated to the promotion of the city's UNESCO site, with the Cathedral, the Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande as protagonists of a program of free initiatives.
Following the pattern of previous editions, the major events that have characterized the festival are expected to be repeated: the evening videomapping show on the Ghirlandina, themed guided tours by reservation, special openings, and workshops for children and families. The detailed 2026 program, including the edition's theme, timings, and participating artists, will be published by the World Heritage Office of the Municipality of Modena in the weeks leading up to the event.
