About World Heritage Festival

Every autumn, Modena dedicates an entire weekend to its UNESCO site, the monumental complex comprising the Cathedral, the Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande. Three days of free events with evening videomapping on the Ghirlandina, themed guided tours, special openings, readings, concerts, and workshops for children, designed to rediscover one of the masterpieces of European Romanesque architecture in the heart of the Emilia region from new perspectives.

A Celebration for Modena's UNESCO Site

Promoted by the Municipality of Modena through the World Heritage Office, the event Modena World Heritage Festival annually celebrates the complex of the Cathedral, the Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997. For an entire weekend, the historic center of the Emilia capital transforms into a widespread stage, with a program that intertwines visual suggestions, words, music, and insights dedicated to one of the greatest masterpieces of European Romanesque architecture, created by architect Lanfranco and sculptor Wiligelmo.

Videomapping on the Ghirlandina

The most anticipated moment is the grand videomapping show projected onto the Ghirlandina Tower in Piazza Torre: Modena's symbolic tower becomes a canvas of light and sound that retraces centuries of history and the work of master builders in just a few minutes. The evening projections, with free admission, attract thousands of people each year and represent the festival's calling card.

Tours, Readings, and Workshops

Alongside the light show, the program offers themed guided tours by reservation, special openings of monuments and cultural institutions, readings and musical moments, as well as workshops for children and families designed to introduce the youngest to the city's heritage. The tours guide participants to discover the artistic treasures of the Cathedral and allow them to observe the medieval city from the top of the Ghirlandina and from unusual viewpoints.

Modena, City of Romanesque

The event is part of the cultural programming of the Municipality of Modena, in the province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna), and dialogues with the city's recognition as a UNESCO Creative City for Media Arts. Visiting the festival means entering the heart of Piazza Grande, admiring Wiligelmo's sculptures on the Cathedral's facade, and being amazed by the illuminated Ghirlandina: an opportunity to experience heritage not as a static museum, but as a living space shared by the Modenese community.

  • Free admission to main events, including evening projections
  • Themed guided tours by reservation
  • Program for children and families
  • Heart of the festival: Cathedral, Ghirlandina Tower, and Piazza Grande
