An alpine pass all for bicycles, from Mezzoldo towards 2,000 meters
There is one day in spring when the historic Passo San Marco โ the pass that connects Val Brembana to Valtellina at an altitude of 2,000 meters โ becomes the exclusive domain of bicycles. This is the Passo San Marco Bike Day, an event that starts from the Municipality of Mezzoldo, in the Province of Bergamo, and attracts cycling enthusiasts and mountain lovers every year.
During the event, the pass is closed to motorized traffic for several hours, from the Mezzoldo side (Val Brembana) to the Albaredo side (Valtellina). This allows cyclists to tackle the climb in complete safety, enjoying the scenery without the worry of cars. The route from Mezzoldo to the summit is approximately 12 km long, with challenging sections and a maximum gradient of 17%.
The Bike Day is a free, non-competitive event, open to all types of bicycles: it's not about the stopwatch, but the pleasure of cycling in an extraordinary natural setting. There are refreshment points along the route, and at the summit, you'll find refuges, restaurants, and agriturismos to refuel.
Passo San Marco is no ordinary pass: over the centuries, it marked the ancient border of the Republic of Venice and is crossed by the historic Via Priula. The event, part of the 'Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina' program, was created precisely to enhance this historical and environmental heritage, promoting slow and sustainable tourism that connects Mezzoldo, Val Brembana, and Valtellina.
The 2026 edition of the Passo San Marco Bike Day takes place on Saturday, May 30th, as part of the 'Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina' program. Passo San Marco will be closed to motorized traffic from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, on both the Mezzoldo (Val Brembana) and Albaredo (Valtellina) sides.
The group departure from Mezzoldo is set for 9:00 AM. The route to the summit is approximately 12 km long, with a maximum gradient of 17% and an elevation gain leading to the pass's 2,000 meters. The event is free, non-competitive, and open to all types of bicycles, with refreshment points along the course managed by volunteers, Alpini, and Civil Protection.
Mezzoldo is located in the Upper Val Brembana, in the Province of Bergamo, along the SS470. The meeting and starting point is at the Municipality of Mezzoldo.
The event is free, non-competitive, and open to all types of bicycles. The climb requires good physical preparation (12 km, gradient up to 17%, up to 2,000 m). Appropriate clothing for the altitude is recommended.
The pass is closed to motorized traffic approximately from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM; the group departure from Mezzoldo is at 9:00 AM.
