Trail race through the terraced vineyards of Valtellina, finishing in the heart of Sondrio
The Valtellina Wine Trail is the race that has made runners and mountain enthusiasts fall in love with a unique landscape: the terraced vineyards of Valtellina, supported by hundreds of kilometres of dry-stone walls carved into the Rhaetian slopes. Starting from the villages of the middle valley and finishing in the heart of Sondrio, the course crosses prestigious wineries, vineyard terraces, and symbolic places such as the Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano and Palazzo Besta in Teglio.
The event offers three distances, all finishing in Sondrio. The Sassella Trail, at 13 km, is the shortest and most accessible route; the Half Trail, at 21 km, raises the bar with more challenging elevation gain; the 42 km Trail is the main event, a true mountain marathon that crowns the day. Alongside these is the Mini Wine Trail, dedicated to children and teenagers, to involve families too.
What makes the Valtellina Wine Trail special is its deep connection with the territory: Valtellina wine, produced from the Nebbiolo grape (known here as Chiavennasca), accompanies the entire experience, from the refreshment points along the route to the celebrations at the finish line, where participants are welcomed with traditional Valtellina dishes. A formula that has made the race one of the most beloved sporting events in the province of Sondrio.
Thousands of bibs, runners from all over Italy, and a postcard-perfect landscape have made the Valtellina Wine Trail an unmissable event on the autumn calendar. Organised by Valtellina Wine Trail S.S.D., with the support of Vini di Valtellina, the event celebrates sport, oenology, and the extraordinary terraced identity of this Alpine valley all at once.
On November 7th, 2026, the terraced vineyards of Valtellina will host a new edition of the Valtellina Wine Trail, with three distances and a finish in the centre of Sondrio. On Sunday, November 8th, it's the turn of the youngest participants with the Mini Wine Trail. Registration opens on May 1st on the ENDU platform.
The routes wind through the vineyards of the middle Valtellina, ancient villages, and prestigious wineries, passing by cultural sites such as the Basilica della Madonna di Tirano and Palazzo Besta in Teglio.
