The sacred representation of Holy Week in the Partanna Mondello district of Palermo
The Passion of Christ of Partanna Mondello is one of the most deeply rooted sacred representations in the Palermo area of Sicily. Every year, during Holy Week, the streets and spaces of the seaside district of Partanna Mondello come alive to reenact, in a theatrical and itinerant format, the final days of Jesus' life: the Entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, the arrest, the trial, the condemnation, and the Crucifixion.
The roots of this performance date back to the mid-20th century, when a devotional procession accompanied the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows on Good Friday. In the early 1960s, a group of young parishioners decided to create a "living" representation, recovering the Spanish-era costumes that inspired the first sacred performances of the Passion. Since then, the event has been passed down from generation to generation, reaching its fifty-ninth edition in 2026.
The event is managed by the Giovanni Paolo II Artistic Group of the Santa Maria degli Angeli parish in Partanna Mondello, an association of volunteers, actors, and technicians from the neighborhood who oversee the direction, set design, costumes, and staging every year. The participation involves dozens of actors of all ages, including children from the parish, in a great collective effort that strengthens the local community's identity.
The representation takes place over several days during Holy Week. It opens with the Entry into Jerusalem and the Historical Pageant along the district's main street, continuing with scenes of Judas' betrayal, the Last Supper, and the Garden of Olives, leading to the final day dedicated to Pilate's Praetorium, the Via Crucis, and the Crucifixion. The most evocative moment is the Via Crucis in the center of Palermo, which travels from Piazza Pretoria along Via Maqueda to the steps of the Teatro Massimo, a natural backdrop for the Crucifixion scene.
Amidst torches, period costumes, music, and emotionally charged silences, the Passion of Partanna Mondello blends religious devotion with popular theater. It is a free event open to everyone, deeply linked to the Holy Week calendar of the Municipality of Palermo and capable of attracting numerous visitors and curious onlookers in addition to residents.
The 59th edition of the Passion of Christ of Partanna Mondello was held from March 29 to April 4, 2026, organized by the Giovanni Paolo II Artistic Group of the Santa Maria degli Angeli parish. The performance spanned the entire Holy Week, reenacting the final hours of Jesus' life through costumed pageants, choral scenes, and the evocative Via Crucis in the center of Palermo.
Partanna Mondello is a seaside district in the northern part of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via Viale Regione Siciliana and the ring road towards Mondello; by bus, using the AMAT lines that connect the city center to Mondello. The final scene of the Via Crucis takes place in the historic center of Palermo, between Piazza Pretoria, Via Maqueda, and the steps of the Teatro Massimo, which is easily accessible on foot from the central station.
Admission to all performances is free.
We recommend arriving early for the Via Crucis in the city center, as it is very well-attended. Wear comfortable clothing to follow the itinerant pageants.
