About Passio Christi

Passio Christi is the grand sacred representation that transforms the historic center of Cerignola, in the province of Foggia, into an open-air theater every Palm Sunday. Over 200 performers re-enact the final days of Jesus, from the Last Supper to the crucifixion, along an itinerant route that starts in Piazza Duomo, winds through the alleys of the Terra Vecchia, and culminates at the evocative Piano delle Fosse Granarie. A blend of faith, memory, and spectacle that engages the entire Apulian community.

The Passion of Christ comes to life in the streets of Cerignola

Every year, on Palm Sunday, the city of Cerignola โ€” a major hub in the province of Foggia, in northern Apulia โ€” gathers around one of its most deeply felt traditions: the Passio Christi. This is not merely a show, but an itinerant sacred representation that unites residents and visitors in an intense journey of spirituality and remembrance, reconstructing the final days of Jesus' life in the most evocative spots of the historic center.

A three-stage journey

The re-enactment is divided into three distinct moments, each tied to a symbolic location in the city. The journey begins near the B.V.M. del Buon Consiglio Parish and in Piazza Duomo, where the washing of the feet, the Last Supper, the Garden of Olives, the trial before the Sanhedrin, Pilate's trial, and the flagellation are staged. The Via Crucis then winds through the ancient alleys of the Terra Vecchia, the oldest core of Cerignola, guiding the audience through a path of profound emotional intensity. The grand finale takes place at the Piano delle Fosse Granarie, the ideal setting for the scenes of the crucifixion, the deposition, and the resurrection.

An entire community on stage

The heart of the Passio Christi lies in its more than 200 performers, drawn from the entire Cerignola community. Alongside the parish community and the Circolo Oratorio ANSPI Carlo Acutis, local theater companies, students from the "Paolillo" middle school, and the Gruppo Sbandieratori di Lucera take part, with the support of the State Police and the Misericordia of Orta Nova. Promoted by Father Ignazio Pedone and the Diocese of Cerignola-Ascoli Satriano, with the support of the municipal administration, the event has become a hallmark of identity for the entire territory.

A tradition that transcends local borders

Having grown over the years to become one of the most attended sacred re-enactments in the Capitanata region, the Passio Christi has an impact that reaches beyond Apulian borders thanks to television broadcasts that, on Good Friday, bring images of the sacred representation to a national audience via the Padre Pio TV and Tele Dehon channels. It is an event that weaves together popular devotion, theater, and civic identity, drawing visitors and the faithful from across the entire province of Foggia to Cerignola.
