A tradition of Epiphany Eve

The Pasquarella of Offeio is celebrated every year on the night of January 5th, the eve of Epiphany, in the hamlet of Offeio in the municipality of Petrella Salto, in the province of Rieti, Lazio. The name of the event itself derives from Epiphany, which in the popular tradition of Central Italy is also called the "first Easter" (prima pasqua): hence the affectionate diminutive "Pasquarella," used to refer to both the festival and the songs that accompany it.

What happens in Offeio

The tradition consists of visiting every house in the village while singing songs of well-wishes. The groups of singers move on foot, from door to door, along the narrow village streets: at the end of each song, it is up to the generosity of the hosts to return the "Happy Easter" greetings by offering food and drinks to refresh the singers. Homemade sweets, local products, wine, and liqueurs accompany an evening that is at once a ritual, a begging tradition, and an occasion for conviviality.

There is no stage and no ticket: the scene is the village itself, illuminated by the windows of the houses that open one by one. Visitors from outside can follow the procession of singers and participate freely, provided they show the respect due to a festival that remains, first and foremost, for the locals.

The roots of the songs

The custom has its roots in an ancient peasant tradition: gathering during the winter months to prepare songs that celebrate the various moments of the Nativity of Christ, to be shared from house to house during the holidays. The repertoire includes well-wishing songs for Christmas, the arrival of the Magi, Epiphany, and the New Year. It is an oral heritage passed down from generation to generation, which has resisted the depopulation of the Apennine hinterland precisely because it is linked to the return of emigrants to their home village.

The setting: the Cicolano and the Salto Valley

Petrella Salto is the largest municipality in the province of Rieti and stretches across a mountainous territory made up of dozens of small hamlets overlooking Lake Salto. We are in the Cicolano, an inland area of northeastern Lazio bordering Abruzzo, where pastoral culture and oral traditions have left deep traces. The Pasquarella is not exclusive to Offeio: the same custom lives on during these days in other villages of the Rieti area and the nearby Turano Valley, such as Paganico Sabino, Castel di Tora, and San Lorenzo di Collalto, testifying to a homogeneous cultural area.

In recent years, the Pasquarella has been included in the holiday schedule promoted by the Municipality of Petrella Salto with the support of the Lazio Region. On January 5th, the program also includes the arrival of the Befana with gifts and sweets for local children in the afternoon, before the evening is dedicated to the singers of Offeio. The offerings collected during the rounds help keep the custom and community activities alive.
