The half marathon connecting the Grifeo Castle to the Temple of Hera
The Partanna-Selinunte Half Marathon is a running event that symbolically links two iconic landmarks of Western Sicily: the Grifeo Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the village of Partanna, and the Temple of Hera in the Selinunte Archaeological Park, one of the most vast and evocative sites of Magna Graecia. Established in 2025, the race has quickly become a highly anticipated fixture in the Sicilian running calendar, transforming a sporting competition into a compelling narrative of the local landscape.
The official half marathon, measured at 21.097 km, kicks off from the square in front of the Grifeo Castle in Partanna. It winds through the town center before continuing along provincial and rural roads, immersing runners in the Belice countryside. The finish line is located within the Selinunte Archaeological Park, near the Temple of Hera, offering a spectacular backdrop for the finale. Alongside the half marathon, a shorter race, the Città di Partanna Run (6.9 km), also finishes in front of the temple, catering to amateur runners and walkers.
The event traverses the heart of the Trapani province, between the towns of Partanna and Castelvetrano, through a landscape steeped in centuries of history: from the Norman and Swabian architecture of the hinterland to the Greek ruins overlooking the sea. The race is enriched by cultural initiatives, including a guided tour on the eve of the event to discover the Grifeo Castle, the ruins of Poggioreale, and the town of Gibellina, which was reshaped by the 1968 Belice earthquake and is now famous for its contemporary art installations.
The event is organized by the ASD Nati Stanchi Runners of Partanna, with the patronage of the municipalities of Partanna and Castelvetrano. The event attracts athletes from across Sicily and many other Italian regions, as well as international participants, confirming a vocation that extends far beyond provincial borders, linking sport to the promotion of the historical and landscape heritage of the Belice valley.
The 2nd edition of the Partanna-Selinunte Half Marathon was held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, recording significant participation with 678 registered runners (518 for the half marathon and 159 for the 6.9 km race), representing 104 running clubs.
The meeting point for judges and competitors was set at 6:30 AM in the square in front of the Selinunte Archaeological Park, with a single start at 8:30 AM for all categories. The half marathon kicked off from the Grifeo Castle in Partanna, while the finish line for both races was located in front of the Temple of Hera. The award ceremony took place around noon.
The 2026 edition confirmed the national and international reach of the event, with athletes coming from numerous Italian regions (Sicily, Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Apulia, Veneto, Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria, Trentino) and from abroad (Germany, Venezuela, Spain, Australia, South Africa).
Partanna is located in the province of Trapani, in Western Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, taking the Castelvetrano exit and continuing inland. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, while Palermo-Punta Raisi is about an hour and a half away.
Registrations are handled via the ENDU platform. Two distances are available: the 21.097 km half marathon and the 6.9 km short race. The entry fee varies based on the registration date, with early-bird rates available.
The meeting point is scheduled for the morning at the Selinunte Archaeological Park; we recommend allowing sufficient time for travel and using the shuttle services between the start and finish lines. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the archaeological site and the Grifeo Castle.
