The century-old carnival tradition of Pantelleria island, featuring local social clubs, dances, and allegorical float parades.
The Pantelleria Carnival is the most beloved folk festival in Pantelleria, a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily that is administratively part of the Municipality of Pantelleria, in the province of Trapani, at the southwestern tip of the Sicilian Region. This event has roots dating back about a century, before the two World Wars, and has continued to unite the communities of the island's various districts for generations.
The unique aspect of the Pantelleria Carnival is its community dimension, built around the contrada social clubs: about sixteen associations scattered across the island that have always served as meeting points for families. During the carnival season, which lasts nearly three months from New Year's Day to Shrove Tuesday, each club organizes a weekly dance night. It is during these dances that one of the oldest and most charming rules is preserved: it is the men who invite the women, who sit together on one side of the room, while the men stand on the other.
The highlight is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups that travels through the town center. The procession, brought to life by hundreds of costumed participants, traditionally starts from the port area and reaches Piazza Cavour, the beating heart of the festival, where the groups perform and public dances take place. Each year, the floats tell different stories, ranging from current events to fantasy, the result of the patient work of local clubs and associations. At the end, a prize is awarded to the club with the most beautiful costumes, while the dancing continues late into the night.
To showcase the entire territory, the municipal administration and the clubs have agreed on a rotating location for the main parade among the island's districts, so that every year the festival can bring life to a different village, from Khamma to the center of Pantelleria. This is a way to further strengthen the bond between Pantescan communities and the sense of belonging that characterizes this celebration.
More than just a party, the Pantelleria Carnival is a collective ritual that asserts the identity of the districts and keeps the island's social ties alive. Organized by the La Mulattiera APS Association in collaboration with numerous local clubs, schools, and associations, it represents one of the most genuine and well-attended events in the Pantelleria calendar, capable of involving residents of all ages and intriguing visitors who choose the island even out of season.
The 2026 edition featured the grand parade on Saturday, February 21, starting from Punta Croce, crossing the Port, and entering the town center, ending in Piazza Cavour, which was crowded with amused and curious onlookers. Over 250 participants enlivened the procession with allegorical floats featuring diverse themes, from characters like Barbie and Ken to topics related to current events and peace.
Numerous local groups and clubs marched, including La Mulattiera, Ogigia, Kohoutek, Quelli della Tinozza, the Vespa Club, Circolo Cesare Battisti, Unione Scauri, PGS Madonna della Pace, the Producers of Bukkuram, as well as local schools and dance academies. The event was hosted by speaker Florinda Valenza. A second event took place on Sunday, February 22, postponed from the 17th due to bad weather, with a gathering at the Interporto, a parade toward Piazza Cavour, and dancing in the square.
Pantelleria can be reached by plane from Pantelleria Airport (with connections to Trapani, Palermo, and, in season, other Italian cities) or by sea via ferries from Trapani. On the island, it is best to get around by rental car or scooter.
The carnival season takes place between January and Shrove Tuesday, with the grand parade of allegorical floats during the Carnival period (February/March depending on the year). The dance nights are held in the district social clubs.
The parade in the square is a public and free event. For evenings at the clubs, it is advisable to check with local associations.
