About Pantano Tomato Festival

Every late August, Ardea in the Lazio region celebrates its most iconic product: the Pantano tomato, a native variety that vanished for over sixty years and has now been successfully recovered. The festival features tomato-based tastings, farm-to-table stalls, free distribution of heirloom seeds, concerts, and open-air performances. A summer event that weaves together gastronomy, folk tradition, and the promotion of the agricultural roots of the Ardea area.

The Pantano Tomato Festival in Ardea

Every year, at the end of August, the Municipality of Ardea celebrates one of its most precious and long-forgotten products: the Pantano Tomato, a native variety once grown in the wetlands โ€” the ยซpantaniยป โ€” between the Via Laurentina and the coast. Having disappeared from the fields for over sixty years, this vegetable with its intense, sweet, and slightly savory flavor has returned to the spotlight thanks to an heirloom seed recovery project promoted by the local municipal administration.

A tribute to the land and its growers

The festival was established in 2024 as a celebration of local identity, designed to bring a piece of the city's agricultural history back into the collective memory. At the heart of the event are tastings of simple, genuine tomato-based dishes: bruschetta, salads, pasta sauces, soups, and rustic pizzas, often enriched with extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil. There is also the free distribution of heirloom seeds, a symbolic gesture inviting citizens and visitors to bring the Pantano back to their home gardens.

Music, shows, and culture

Alongside the food stalls, the program of the various editions has featured show cooking with local chefs, dance school performances, live concerts, and educational moments dedicated to sustainable agriculture and the farm-to-table philosophy. The festival takes place outdoors, usually in Piazzale Virgilio along the Via Laurentina, with free admission and a festive village atmosphere.

Ardea, between sea and archaeology

Located in the Province of Rome, in the Lazio region, just a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast, Ardea is a village of ancient origins โ€” the legendary Ardea of the Rutuli mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid. The festival is also an opportunity to discover the archaeological and natural heritage of the area, including historical sites, countryside, and beaches. An event that combines gastronomy, folk tradition, and the enhancement of local roots.
