The patronal feast of San Pancrazio in the Ultental Valley
The Pankrazer Kirchtagsfest is the patronal feast (known as Kirchtag in German) of San Pancrazio (St. Pankraz), the first municipality encountered when traveling up the Ultental Valley in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. Every year around mid-May, the Dorfzentrum (village center) transforms into the stage for one of the community's most cherished celebrations, dedicated to the patron saint, Saint Pancras.
The event spans two days. Saturday kicks off the celebrations in the late afternoon: following the traditional cannon salutes, the evening continues with DJs energizing the square and a garage party, which is particularly popular with the younger crowd. Sunday is dedicated to the more solemn and traditional aspects of the Kirchtag: it begins at dawn with a wake-up call of cannon fire, followed by a festive mass and a concert by the local brass band.
Sunday afternoon is enlivened by South Tyrolean folk music groups, accompanying lunch and the convivial atmosphere under the marquees. Visitors can enjoy typical South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties and beers served by local associations. Cannon salutes mark the highlights of the day, following a ritual dear to the traditions of the South Tyrolean valleys.
The Pankrazer Kirchtagsfest is also designed with children in mind: throughout Sunday, the village center hosts games, a bouncy castle, a painting corner, face painting, a raffle, and a climbing tower. This program makes the festival a perfect outing for the whole family, designed to involve the entire community.
Located at the entrance to the Ultental Valley (Ultental), San Pancrazio is a German-speaking village nestled in an alpine landscape of forests, meadows, and ancient farmsteads. The Kirchtag represents a strong identity marker, where the community gathers around its church and local associations. For visitors, it is an authentic opportunity to discover the folk culture of the municipality of San Pancrazio and the valleys of South Tyrol, far from the more crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition was held on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, in the Dorfzentrum of San Pancrazio.
On Saturday, from 5:00 PM, the festivities came to life with cannon salutes at 7:00 PM and a musical evening with DJs in the village square and the garage party.
Sunday began at 7:00 AM with a wake-up call marked by cannon fire, followed at 9:00 AM by the festive mass and at 10:30 AM by the brass band concert. Throughout the day, folk music groups provided entertainment for lunch and the afternoon, while children enjoyed games, a bouncy castle, a painting corner, face painting, a raffle, and a climbing tower. The festival concluded at 7:00 PM with final cannon salutes.
The Pankrazer Kirchtagsfest is held in the Dorfzentrum (village center) of San Pancrazio/St. Pankraz (ZIP 39010), at the entrance to the Ultental Valley, in the province of Bolzano.
By car, San Pancrazio can be reached via the Ultental road that branches off from Lana, a few kilometers from Merano; from the A22 Brenner motorway, take the Bolzano Sud exit and continue towards Merano and Lana. The village is also served by local South Tyrolean bus lines.
Admission to the festival is free. For updated schedules and the detailed program, it is recommended to check the website of the Municipality of San Pancrazio and the tourist portals of the Ultental Valley and the Merano area.
