The statue was commissioned by local residents as an ex-voto of gratitude to the Virgin for the protection received during the bombings of the Second World War. Placed in the square on May 18, 1947, it was solemnly dedicated to the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1948. Since then, the Madonnina has become a historical and identity-defining symbol of Montesacro, so beloved that in 2022, residents mobilized to prevent its relocation, forming the Salviamo Piazza Sempione committee.

How the floral tribute takes place

The most anticipated moment is the procession of First Communion children: led by the parish priest, they are the first to lay red roses and lilies at the feet of the statue. Together with parents, the faithful, and citizens, the neighborhood gathers in a moment of prayer, song, and gratitude.
