About Panevin

The Panevin is the ancient tradition of Epiphany bonfires that on January 5th lights up the districts of Pordenone. Amidst flaming pyres, mulled wine, 'pinza' cake, and rhymes, the community gathers to read the omens of the new year in the smoke, according to the 'Pan e Vin' custom.

The night of the Epiphany bonfires

On the evening of January 5th, on the eve of Epiphany, Pordenone renews one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the Northeast: the Panevin, or Pan e Vin. Large bonfires are lit in the various districts of the city, around which the community gathers in an ancient rite that combines conviviality, peasant memory, and omens for the year just begun.

The name itself, 'pan e vin', meaning bread and wine, encapsulates the meaning of the rite: a wish for abundance for the months to come. According to custom, the direction of the bonfire's smoke is interpreted as an omen for the new year, in a gesture that connects generations and revives the popular knowledge of the territory.

A district festival

In Pordenone, the Panevin is a widespread festival, organized by the committees and associations of the various districts — from Villanova to Vallenoncello, from Comina to other hamlets. Each bonfire has its own atmosphere: torchlight processions through the neighborhood streets, musical bands, shows for children, the Befana distributing sweets, and, invariably, the 'pinza' cake and mulled wine to warm the winter evening.

Living tradition in the territory

With the support of the Municipality of Pordenone, the Panevin remains a deeply identity-forming event, capable of closing the festive season in the name of community and tradition. A simple and authentic evening, where the warmth of the bonfires and typical dishes tell the most genuine spirit of Western Friuli.

Panevin — edition 2026

On January 5, 2026, Pordenone lit its traditional Epiphany bonfires in the districts of Villanova, Vallenoncello, Comina, and other hamlets, amidst torchlight processions, music, mulled wine, and 'pinza' cake, following the ancient 'Pan e Vin' custom.

On the evening of January 5, 2026, Pordenone renewed the Panevin tradition with large bonfires lit in various districts of the city. In Villanova, at the Lupieri Sports Center, the 'Festa in Piassa' featured a torchlight procession through the neighborhood streets accompanied by the Unbrassed Street Band, followed by the lighting of the bonfire and entertainment for children under the marquee.

In Comina, at the Villaggio del Fanciullo, the 'Mega Pan e Vin de Pordenon' was held with the lighting at 8 PM, traditional rhymes, music, 'pinza' cake, and mulled wine. In Vallenoncello, at the Sports Center, the 'Panevin de Valenonsel' was preceded by the option to dine on pork knuckle and potatoes by reservation and by food stalls with typical dishes like polenta and sausage, pasta and beans.
