A carnival celebration for all ages in the Town Hall Square
The Pancalieri Alpini Carnival is one of the most cherished winter traditions in this small town on the Po plain, located in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. Organized by the Pancalieri Alpini Group—a historic local association—in partnership with the municipal administration, this is a simple, authentic carnival designed primarily for families and children. While it may not be a massive event, it is brimming with warmth and community spirit.
The event centers on the Piazza del Municipio (Town Hall Square), which transforms for an afternoon into a kingdom of confetti, streamers, and colorful costumes. Amidst the music and merriment, children in costume take center stage, while the Alpini welcome guests of all ages with the legendary hospitality for which the 'black feathers' are known.
The main attraction is the grand Amici del Pellice float. Based in Cavour, this carnival group has spent years winning acclaim at parades across the provinces of Cuneo and Turin. The float is parked in the square, ready to captivate the public with its spectacular design—a massive papier-mâché creation, the result of months of hard work, bringing a taste of the region's major carnivals to Pancalieri.
Pancalieri, famous throughout the region for its mint cultivation, takes great pride in preserving its folk traditions. The carnival organized by the Alpini is part of a tapestry of local festivals that mark the winter calendar across the Province of Turin with parades, masks, and social gatherings. It is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, entertain the children, and keep local identity alive.
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, Pancalieri celebrated Carnival thanks to the Alpini Group, which, in collaboration with the municipality, brought the Town Hall Square to life from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. An afternoon dedicated to families, filled with confetti, masks, and plenty of fun for the children.
The heart of the party was the float from the Amici del Pellice, an award-winning group from Cavour that has graced carnivals across the provinces of Cuneo and Turin, bringing their impressive papier-mâché scenery to the square to delight both young and old.
In 2026, the Amici del Pellice float featured an installation titled "The Forest of Illusions"—a 14-meter-long, 12-meter-high, and 8-meter-wide papier-mâché masterpiece, featuring a large tiger as its symbolic centerpiece—which was a highlight in numerous parades across the provinces of Turin and Cuneo.
