Traditional potato croquettes from San Leucio in the heart of the Real Borgo
In the heart of the Real Borgo di San Leucio, a Caserta district world-renowned for its ancient silk manufacturing, the Pallottole Festival returns every mid-June to celebrate one of the most authentic symbols of local culinary tradition. The event takes place in the scenic Piazza della Trattoria, inside the Bourbon monumental complex commissioned by Ferdinand IV of Bourbonโone of the most fascinating sites in the province of Caserta and all of Campania.
The stars of the festival are the pallottole, traditional potato croquettes prepared since the Bourbon era and still representing a culinary heritage passed down orally from generation to generation. Golden and crispy on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside, they are served hot in various versions, accompanied by traditional rustic side dishes and local wines from the Caserta area.
Beyond the tastings, the festival offers two evenings of entertainment with stalls, performances, and live Neapolitan folk music. The atmosphere ranges from the most beautiful songs of the Neapolitan heritage to humorous numbers, creating a festive and communal spirit that engages both residents and visitors in the charming setting of the 18th-century village.
The Pallottole Festival has earned the prestigious "Quality Festival" label awarded by the National UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy) in collaboration with ANCI. This recognition certifies the authenticity of the products, environmental sustainability, hospitality, and the promotion of local cultural heritage. The event is organized by the APS Pro Loco Real Sito di San Leucio, which has been dedicated to promoting the village's traditions for years.
The Pallottole Festival is traditionally paired with the Historical Pageant of the Real Colonia di San Leucio, a grand re-enactment that brings the village streets to life in June with over two hundred participants, scenes of ancient daily life and crafts, folk dances, and the famous Royal Changing of the Guard. Together, the two events offer a complete immersion into the history and flavors of the Bourbon Royal Colony, the identity heart of the city of Caserta.
The 2026 Pallottole Festival was held on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 in the Piazza della Trattoria of the Real Borgo di San Leucio, starting at 7:00 PM. The traditional golden and crispy pallottole were served hot alongside rustic side dishes and local wines.
The musical program featured Franco Mantovanelli, accompanied by soprano Grazia Ricciardi and the choral group "'O core 'ngrato", taking the audience on a musical journey through the most beautiful Neapolitan songs and engaging humorous pieces. On Saturday, June 20, the stage welcomed Trincanote, a group dedicated to popular and classical Neapolitan music. This edition also celebrated the official awarding of the "Quality Festival" label by the National UNPLI.
San Leucio is located about 4 km from the center of Caserta. By car: take the Caserta Nord exit from the A1 motorway, then follow signs for San Leucio. By train: arrive at Caserta station, served by lines from Naples and Rome, then take a local bus or taxi to the Real Borgo.
Admission to the festival area is free. Tickets for the pallottole and other food tastings can be purchased directly on-site at the stands.
We recommend arriving in the evening (from 7:00 PM) to fully enjoy the atmosphere and live music. Parking is available in the areas surrounding the village.
