The historic festival of the village of Marciana, on the Island of Elba
Perched on the slopes of Monte Capanne in the province of Livorno, the village of Marciana is one of the oldest and most charming spots on the Island of Elba. Every year on August 18th, its cobblestone streets and squares become the stage for the Palio di Sant'Agabito, a historic festival celebrated by the Marciana community in honor of its patron saint. It is an event that blends devotion, sport, and historical memory, attracting residents and tourists alike in search of the most authentic side of Elba.
The origins of the festival date back to the 15th century, during the rule of the Appiani family. Legend has it that Donna Paola Colonna, after being widowed by Gerardo Appiani, moved to Marciana and had a church built dedicated to Saint Agabito, likely in honor of her father. Since then, the community has celebrated the saint with games, music, and moments of conviviality. What is now a costumed re-enactment maintains a deep connection to the village's history and its ancient identity.
The competitive heart of the Palio is the challenge between the six districts into which the village is divided: San Francesco, San Liborio, Santa Croce, Sant'Agabito, San Sebastiano, and San Frediano. Each district fields its own representatives in various events, fostering a spirit of healthy competition that involves entire families and generations.
The evening opens in the square with the Archers' Palio, organized by the sports association Gli Archi del Grande Falco: archers from the districts compete to hit the target with skill and precision in a display of talent. The most anticipated moment, however, is the Corsa del Ciocco (Log Race), a relay where four runners per district carry a heavy wooden log (about 18 kg) through the narrow streets of the historic center. A shorter version, the Corsa del Ciocchetto, is dedicated to children and precedes the main race. The event is framed by costumed processions, drums, flags, flag-wavers, and folk games that enliven the square, the Fortress, and the entire village.
Experiencing the Palio di Sant'Agabito means discovering a different side of Elba, far from the crowded beaches: the world of mountain villages, traditions proudly preserved, and a community that renews its appointment with history every summer. For those visiting the island in August, it is the perfect opportunity to combine sea, nature, and popular culture in a single evening.
The Palio di Sant'Agabito 2026 takes place in Marciana on August 18th, in the historic center of the village. The festival follows the usual format that has enlivened the streets and squares of the town for years in honor of the patron saint, with the participation of the six districts and the organization of the Municipality of Marciana together with the Pro Loco and the Il Rifugio association.
The evening alternates between tests of skill, spectacular moments, and historical re-enactments, with the public spread along the alleys of the center to follow the Log Race up close.
Throughout the evening, folk games and entertainment in the square, at the Fortress, and through the streets of the historic center.
The Palio di Sant'Agabito takes place every year on August 18th, from approximately 7:00 PM until midnight, in the historic center of Marciana.
Marciana is located in Upper Elba, on the slopes of Monte Capanne. It can be reached by car from the main towns on the island (Portoferraio, Marina di Campo, Procchio). The Island of Elba is connected to the mainland by ferries departing from Piombino (province of Livorno) to Portoferraio, Rio Marina, and Cavo.
The event is free and takes place outdoors. It is recommended to arrive early to find a spot along the Corsa del Ciocco route and to park near the village, which is very busy in August. For information, you can contact the Pro Loco Marciana Elba APS.
