Renaissance re-enactment and challenge between the four districts of San Casciano dei Bagni
The Palio di San Cassiano is the signature event of San Casciano dei Bagni, a small village in the Province of Siena, Tuscany, famous for its thermal waters and, in recent years, for the extraordinary archaeological discovery of the bronze statues at the Bagno Grande sanctuary. The festival began in 1995 with the aim of rediscovering and staging the ancient bathing seasons of the 16th to 18th centuries, when visitors arrived from everywhere to seek healing in the town's hot springs. Since then, the Palio has established itself as the most anticipated event of the summer in San Casciano, held on the Sunday closest to August 13th, the day dedicated to Saint Cassian, the village's patron saint.
The heart of the event is the challenge between the town's four historic districts: Campanile, Porticciola, Pozzo, and Gattineto. Each brings its streets to life with colors, banners, and a healthy popular rivalry passed down from generation to generation, involving both young and old in a full week of preparations and community life.
In the late afternoon, participants in Renaissance costumes gather near the castle to bring a striking historical procession to life, featuring ladies, knights, drummers, guards, judges, and flag bearers. The procession winds through the historic center to the Church of San Leonardo, where the parish priest gives the blessing of the Palio and the Magistrate receives the oath of the district captains. With the lighting of the torches, the village is bathed in an atmosphere of times past.
The challenges between the districts then begin, a series of popular games that award decisive points for the final race:
The district with the highest total score starts in an advantageous position, while the others follow in order based on the results achieved.
The highlight is the historic race that gives the Palio its name: the granocchiai (frog handlers) push carts carrying a frog along the village track. The district whose cart crosses the finish line first without losing the frog during the race wins the drappellone (banner), a test as spectacular as it is full of tension and fun. The winner is awarded the banner, which is painted by an artist each year.
Experiencing the Palio di San Cassiano means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic festivals in southern Tuscany, within the walls of a thermal village rich in history, just a stone's throw from the borders with Umbria and Lazio. The event, organized by the Compagnia del Palio, combines historical re-enactment, local gastronomy, and community spirit in an evening that stays in the hearts of residents and visitors alike.
The 29th edition of the San Cassiano Palio is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026, in San Casciano dei Bagni. The four districts—Campanile, Porticciola, Pozzo, and Gattineto—will return to compete in the Renaissance historical parade and traditional trials, leading up to the famous final race of the carts with the frog. The detailed program, including times and trials, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The San Cassiano Palio is confirmed for Sunday, August 9, 2026, in San Casciano dei Bagni, in the Province of Siena. As per tradition, the day features a gathering of participants in Renaissance costumes, a historical parade with ladies, knights, drummers, and banners, the blessing of the palio in the church of San Leonardo, and the challenges between the four districts, culminating in the spectacular race of the carts with the frog.

San Casciano dei Bagni is located in the far south of the Province of Siena, on the border with Umbria and Lazio. By car: take the Fabro exit on the A1 motorway, then follow the provincial roads towards San Casciano dei Bagni. The nearest train station is Chiusi-Chianciano Terme, about 30 km away.
The event takes place on the Sunday closest to August 13th, the feast day of the patron saint, Saint Cassian. In 2026, the date is Sunday, August 9th.
Admission to the festival is free. We recommend arriving in the afternoon to watch the historical pageant and booking accommodation in advance during the summer months, which is the peak thermal season.
