The challenge between the eight districts of Montepulciano: 80 kg barrels pushed up to Piazza Grande
The Bravìo delle Botti is the most deeply felt and iconic event in Montepulciano, a stunning wine-growing village in the province of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. Every year, on the last Sunday of August, the city's eight districts face off in a unique competition: two pushers from each district roll a heavy 80 kg wooden barrel by hand along an uphill course of over 1,800 meters, winding through the alleys of the historic center and culminating on the steps of the Cathedral in Piazza Grande.
The rivalry that fuels the Bravìo involves the eight local districts, each with its own colors, emblem, and headquarters:
The winning district claims the Panno, a banner painted each year by a different artist, which is carried in triumph to the district headquarters until the following year's race.
The origins date back to ancient festivals in honor of the patron saint San Giovanni Decollato. The challenge was once held on horseback before evolving into the current barrel-pushing race, a tribute to the winemaking heritage of the land of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The modern event, organized by the Municipality of Montepulciano, is a grand historical re-enactment that brings the city's Renaissance splendor to life with costumed figures, flag-wavers, drummers, and processions.
The race is the highlight of an entire week of celebrations that brings Montepulciano to life: from the Proclamation of the Gonfaloniere that officially opens the games, to district dinners in the village squares and alleys, and the evocative Procession of the Candles, an evening torchlight parade that concludes with the offering of candles to the patron saint. Flag-waving displays, music, and traditional cuisine accompany visitors throughout the week.
Attending the Bravìo delle Botti means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic and spectacular traditions in Tuscany: the physical exertion of the pushers, the passion of the district members, and the scenic beauty of a Renaissance village serving as the stage. An unmissable event for those visiting the Val d'Orcia and Valdichiana at the end of summer.
The 2026 edition of the Bravìo delle Botti, the 52nd of the modern series, takes place in Montepulciano from Saturday, August 22 to Sunday, August 30, 2026. The barrel race, the highlight of the event, is scheduled for Sunday, August 30 at 7:00 PM, starting from the Colonna del Marzocco and arriving in Piazza Grande. The Panno awarded this year is dedicated to a commemorative theme: the 80th anniversary of the proclamation of the Italian Republic and the first women's vote.
By car: A1 motorway, exit Valdichiana/Bettolle-Sinalunga, then follow the provincial road to Montepulciano. By train: Montepulciano station (Siena-Chiusi line), connected to the center by bus, or Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station on the main line. The historic center is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL): it is recommended to park in the lower parking lots and walk up.
The last Sunday of August; the 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, August 30, with the race starting at 7:00 PM from the Colonna del Marzocco.
Access to the streets of the center during the race is free. It is recommended to arrive well in advance to find a spot along the route.
