Gela's medieval historical pageant in honor of Maria SS dell'Alemanna

The Palio dell'Alemanna is the premier historical re-enactment in the town of Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. Every summer, in the days leading up to the festivities for the patron saint Maria Santissima dell'Alemanna, the historic walled center transforms into a grand medieval stage: music, dances, songs, combat displays, historical processions, knights, flag-wavers, and drummers transport visitors back to the era of Frederick II of Swabia's court.
The event was established in 2015 by the Gruppo Archeologico Geloi (now Geloi APS), founded by Giuseppe La Spina and Francesco D'Aleo, with the goal of highlighting a lesser-known but fascinating period of Gela's history: the Middle Ages. During those years, Gela, then renamed Terranova, was closely linked to Frederick II of Swabia, King of Sicily and a central figure of an extraordinary cultural era. The Palio dell'Alemanna thus weaves together popular devotion to the patron saint with the revival of medieval customs and traditions.
The heart of the event is the grand historical procession, featuring hundreds of participants in period costumes, including ladies, knights, and historical groups from across Sicily. The procession travels through the main squares and streets of the center, including Piazza Sant'Agostino, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Piazza Umberto I, interspersed with performances by flag-wavers, musicians, drummers, falconers, and mounted knights. The festival concludes with the Palio tournament and the awarding of the winner.
The Palio dell'Alemanna is organized by the Municipality of Gela with the support of local volunteer associations and the patronage of the Sicilian Region. The event, which is free to attend, has become one of the most anticipated highlights of the Gela summer, successfully blending the religious and identity-focused aspects of a patronal feast with the charm of a historical re-enactment, drawing both residents and visitors into the city's evocative walled historic center.
The 2026 edition of the Palio dell'Alemanna will once again bring to Gela the grand medieval historical re-enactment that brings the historic walled center to life in honor of the patron saint Maria SS dell'Alemanna. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced at the time of writing; the event is traditionally held in the final days of August. It is recommended to verify updates on the official channels of the Municipality of Gela.
Gela is located on the southern coast of Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it is accessible via the SS115 (Syracuse-Trapani). By train, Gela station is served by the line connecting the city to Caltanissetta and Catania. The nearest airport is Comiso (Ragusa), followed by Catania-Fontanarossa.
The events take place in the historic walled center of Gela, along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and in the main squares (Piazza Sant'Agostino, Piazza Umberto I).
Participation in the Palio dell'Alemanna events is free.
