The patronal feast of Gela in honor of Maria SS. dell'Alemanna
The Feast of the Madonna dell'Alemanna is the main religious and popular celebration in Gela, in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of southern Sicily. Every year, around September 8th, the entire city gathers around its patron saint, Maria Santissima dell'Alemanna, in a blend of devotion, tradition, and community spirit that involves every neighborhood.
At the heart of the festival is an ancient Byzantine icon depicting the Madonna, housed in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. dell'Alemanna. Tradition links the cult to the Teutonic Knights (the "Knights of Alemannia"), who, according to local sources, introduced the veneration of the sacred image. The Madonna dell'Alemanna has been the official patron saint of Gela since the mid-17th century, following a papal bull, and the people of Gela attribute the city's salvation during dramatic moments, such as the 1693 earthquake and the 1943 bombings, to her protection.
The highlight is the solemn procession of the Sacred Icon through the city streets in the late afternoon of September 8th, accompanied by brass bands and the prayers of the faithful. Along the route, deeply meaningful gestures are renewed:
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves the most ancient traditions of Gela. The Palliantino (also known as "U paliu 'a 'ntinna" or the greasy pole at sea) returns—a spectacular competition on a soap-covered beam suspended over the sea that combines sport, skill, and community spirit. The Palio dell'Alemanna also takes place, featuring costumed participants, along with various sporting competitions between the city's neighborhoods. From the 5th, the streets fill with local craft exhibitions and stalls selling typical local products.
The day of September 8th concludes in the evening with a grand seaside fireworks display, which illuminates the Gela coastline and seals four days of festivities blending faith and Sicilian popular tradition.
