The festival of wild orchids in the heart of the Majella National Park
Palena, a small mountain village in the province of Chieti nestled in the Majella National Park, is one of the municipalities richest in wild orchids in Italy. Its territory is home to over 64 species and subspecies of wild orchids, accounting for more than 60% of those found in Abruzzo and over 35% of those in Italy, in addition to numerous stabilized hybrids. It is from this exceptional biodiversity that the "Palena in the Land of Orchids" event was born, a spring gathering that attracts botany enthusiasts, hikers, and families every May.
The event weaves together scientific outreach and exploration of the territory. The program includes educational and training activities aimed at schools, with workshops dedicated to orchids and the wonders of nature, and above all, guided excursions in search of the blooms, particularly in the Cotte area, on the meadows of the Plateau where wild orchids put on a spectacular show. Botanists and experts accompany participants to discover rare species, explaining the ecology and conservation of these plants, which are considered among the most evolved in the world.
The event is not just about nature: in the historic center of Palena, the weekend comes alive with the Orchid Festival designed for children, featuring bouncy castles, music, and entertainment, a guided tour of the Ducal Castle (the majestic Castel Forte that overlooks the village), and evenings with live music and food stalls dedicated to traditional Abruzzese cuisine. It is an opportunity to discover, beyond the orchids, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club.
Organized by the Pro Loco Palena in collaboration with the Majella National Park, the event combines environmental protection, sustainable tourism, and the promotion of local traditions. In the Municipality of Palena, in the heart of the Apennine Abruzzo, orchids have become a symbol of identity and a driver of nature tourism, capable of attracting visitors from all over Italy during the flowering season.
The 2026 edition opened on Friday, May 15 at 9:00 AM with "At School with Orchids and other Wonders of Nature," a day of educational and training activities and excursions to discover the local wild orchids.
Saturday, May 16, the gathering of participants at 9:00 AM at the "le casette" parking lot kicked off the excursion to observe the blooms in the Cotte area. In the afternoon, at 3:30 PM, a coffee-meeting along the main street of Palena; at 4:00 PM, the "Orchid Festival" for children with bouncy castles, music, and stalls; at 5:00 PM, the guided tour of the Ducal Castle; at 6:00 PM, the evening party with music and food stalls.
Palena is located in the province of Chieti, in the Majella National Park, at an altitude of approximately 767 m. By car: from the A25 motorway (exit Torre de' Passeri or Pratola Peligna), continue along the inland roads towards the Aventino Valley. Excursions generally depart from the "le casette" parking lot.
Guided excursions require booking with the Pro Loco Palena ([email protected], tel. +39 333 5224973 / +39 349 1950922). Hiking shoes, layered clothing, and a camera are recommended.
The event is traditionally held in May, during the flowering period of the wild orchids.
