The Nativity comes to life among the stone alleys of this Messina village
During the Christmas season, the village of Pagliara, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Sicilian Ionian coast, dresses up to host its Living Nativity. It is one of the community's most cherished events: the narrow alleys, stairways, and stone houses of the historic center become the natural stage for a grand Nativity performance, where local actors bring scenes of Christian tradition and ancient crafts to life.
The scenes are spread throughout the heart of the village and are discovered by strolling slowly through the illuminated ancient alleys. The setting recreates a simple and genuine environment, rich in humanity: the Holy Family, shepherds, ancient trades, and corners of daily life from the past accompany the visitor along an intimate and cozy itinerary. The atmosphere is that of the Christmas of yesteryear, far from the lights of big cities and capable of restoring the authentic charm of Sicilian folk tradition.
The living nativity is the result of the collective work of the entire town. The event is promoted by the SS. Pietro e Paolo Parish and features mainly the youth of the community, coordinated by Father Salvatore Arcoraci, in a tribute to the spirituality and cultural roots of Pagliara. The preparation involves families, volunteers, and residents of the village, who commit themselves every year to presenting the performance with care and passion.
The event takes place in the historic center of Pagliara, between Christmas and Epiphany, during the evening hours, when the soft lighting makes the journey through the alleys even more evocative. The visit is free and suitable for the whole family, representing an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the province of Messina, Sicily, off the beaten tourist path.
During the 2025-2026 Christmas season, the village of Pagliara renewed its appointment with its Living Nativity. The event took place over three evenings, December 26 and 27, 2025 and January 4, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Along the alleys and stairways of the historic center, the actors brought to life scenes of the Nativity and tableaux of ancient trades, recreating a simple and genuine environment, rich in humanity. The performance, promoted by the SS. Pietro e Paolo Parish with the involvement of the community's youth, confirmed the intimate and evocative atmosphere of the Christmas of yesteryear in the heart of the province of Messina.
Three opening evenings: December 26 and 27, 2025, and January 4, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A staged route through the alleys of the historic center with scenes of the Nativity and ancient trades.
Pagliara is located in the province of Messina, on the Ionian coast of Sicily. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the exit for the area and then continuing towards the hilly hinterland. The nearest train station is located along the Ionian coastal line (Roccalumera-Nizza di Sicilia area), from where you can continue by car towards the village.
The living nativity is held in the evening hours, approximately from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, on opening days between Christmas and Epiphany. Admission is free.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking through alleys and stairways, as well as warm clothing given the winter season and evening hours.
