The Saints Cosmas and Damian Festival is one of the most deep-rooted religious events in Santa Teresa di Riva, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Ionian Sea. The protagonists are the two Physician Saints, wonder-workers venerated by Christian tradition as protectors of the sick and patrons of the medical profession, to whom the community of the Torrevarata district directs an ancient and deeply felt devotion.

Roots in the Sacra Famiglia Parish

The cult of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Santa Teresa di Riva dates back to 1928, when the devotion was introduced at the Sacra Famiglia Church. The building, whose construction began in 1903 and was funded entirely by public donations, houses the exquisite statue group depicting the two Saints, created in 1927 by an artist from Syracuse. The church, elevated to a parish in 1945, encompasses the districts of Sacra Famiglia, Borgo Marino, Pozzo Lazzaro, and Torrevarata, the beating heart of the festivities.

The Procession: The Highlight

The core of the festival is the procession of the statue group, which winds along the main street and through the streets of the Torrevarata district. The simulacrum of the Physician Saints is carried on shoulders through rows of faithful, accompanied by a brass band, festive lights, and the devout participation of the entire community. The celebrations are traditionally held on the last Sunday of September, close to the liturgical feast day of September 26, although in some years the date has been moved forward by a week due to calendar adjustments.

Faith, Art, and Tradition

Beyond the liturgical rites and the procession, the festivities have featured moments of great cultural depth over the years, such as performances and concerts hosted in the Sacra Famiglia church, where sacred music, folk songs, and dance engage with devotion. The parish, led in recent years by Father Alessandro De Gregorio, has also promoted a Jubilee Year of the Physician Saints, a sign of the vitality of a tradition that continues to unite generations.
