The August 5th festival in the village of Barano di Tornimparte, blending devotion, processions, and folk traditions.

Every year, on August 5th, the village of Barano, in the municipality of Tornimparte (L'Aquila province, Abruzzo), gathers for the Our Lady of the Snows Festival. In this small hamlet tucked away in the hills of the L'Aquila region, this event is much more than a simple liturgical celebration: it is the moment when an entire community rediscovers its identity, its sense of belonging, and the joy of being together.
The festival is rooted in the popular devotion to Our Lady of the Snows, linked to the ancient Roman miracle of the 4th century, when—according to legend—a summer snowfall on the Esquiline Hill indicated where the Basilica of Saint Mary Major should be built. In Barano, celebrating in the heart of August takes on a fascinating, almost paradoxical quality, ideally evoking long mountain winters exorcised by collective faith. The community gathers around the Church of Santa Maria della Neve, the spiritual heart of the village.
The highlight of the day is the procession. In the days leading up to it, the village prepares: streets are cleaned, lights are set up, and the church is decorated. On August 5th, the statue of the Madonna is hoisted onto shoulders and carried along the main street of the village in a genuine act of collective devotion, filled with silence, prayer, and contemplation. It is a ritual that unites different generations and brings those who have emigrated back home.
Once the procession concludes, the atmosphere shifts into a shared celebration. Among the most cherished traditions are:
In recent editions, the community has enriched the festivities with initiatives that strongly emphasize their identity, such as a historical pageant and an archery Palio, which evoke local traditions and the history of the territory.
In Tornimparte, where the 2009 earthquake left deep scars and reconstruction has been a long process, the Our Lady of the Snows Festival takes on an even stronger meaning: it is an act of civil resilience, an affirmation that life continues, that traditions have not been broken, and that hope has not abandoned these lands of inland Abruzzo.
The Our Lady of the Snows Festival in Barano di Tornimparte is expected again in 2026, traditionally around August 5th. At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the official dates and program for the edition. As every year, the return of the events that characterize the festival is expected: the procession of the Madonna statue through the streets of the village, the community lunch, and the traditional tablecloth auction. The detailed program will be published by the community in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival takes place in the village of Barano, in the municipality of Tornimparte (AQ), around the Church of Santa Maria della Neve.
Tornimparte can be reached by car from L'Aquila in about 20 minutes, taking the A24/A25 motorway exit (Tornimparte junction). The reference airport and train station are those of L'Aquila and Avezzano.
The festival is traditionally celebrated on August 5th. Admission to the events is free.
