The Ferragosto celebration in the village of Santa Maria di Scoppito, blending devotion and entertainment
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, the village of Santa Maria, in the municipality of Scoppito (Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo), celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary around the Ferragosto holiday. The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most deeply felt occasions in the Italian religious calendar, and in many Apennine villages, it marks the liveliest moment of the summer, when communities reunite and many who have moved away return to their roots.
The heart of the festivities is Piazza di Santa Maria, which for one night transforms into an open-air theater. Alongside the religious dimension of the feast, with celebrations in honor of the Virgin, the event features a convivial and spectacular side, designed to bring residents and visitors together through music and joy.
The main evening offers a true village show: it begins with a concert by the "Export Medley in Italy" show orchestra, which captivates the audience with a repertoire of dance hits and classics, followed by comedy with the unmissable "Songs and Cabaret" show. This proven format alternates live music, laughter, and audience engagement, in the spirit of the best Abruzzo village entertainment tradition.
Scoppito is an Apennine town located just a few kilometers from L'Aquila, in the L'Aquila basin, comprising numerous hamlets scattered across the hills. Among its villages are Santa Maria and Madonna della Strada, the latter famous for an exceptional paleontological discovery: in 1954, the fossil skeleton of a Mammuthus meridionalis, the southern mammoth, was unearthed in this territory. Patronal and village feasts, like this one dedicated to the Assumption, remain a precious piece of the identity of these small mountain hamlets, where community participation is still the true driving force of the event.
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not a large tourist festival, but an authentic celebration organized by the local committee with the collaboration of the Santa Maria community. It is the ideal opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the Abruzzo Ferragosto far from mass tourism, amidst the warmth of the local people, the sounds of the party, and good company under the summer Apennine sky.
At the moment, the festival committee has not yet published the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of the Assumption in Santa Maria di Scoppito.
Based on tradition, the festival takes place around Ferragosto, with an evening show in Piazza di Santa Maria combining a concert and cabaret. The detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festivities are held in Piazza di Santa Maria, in the village of Santa Maria, in the municipality of Scoppito (AQ), postal code 67019.
Scoppito is located about 13 km from L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached via the A24 Rome-L'Aquila-Teramo motorway (L'Aquila Ovest exit) and the SS 17 road. The reference railway station is L'Aquila, on the Terni-Sulmona line.
The festival is organized by the local festival committee. For updated dates and the program of the current edition, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Scoppito and the communications from the village associations.
