Scoppito and the L'Aquila basin

Scoppito is an Apennine town located just a few kilometers from L'Aquila, in the L'Aquila basin, comprising numerous hamlets scattered across the hills. Among its villages are Santa Maria and Madonna della Strada, the latter famous for an exceptional paleontological discovery: in 1954, the fossil skeleton of a Mammuthus meridionalis, the southern mammoth, was unearthed in this territory.
