About Ocre Tempore Medii Aevi

Every summer, the village of San Panfilo d'Ocre, the municipal seat of Ocre in the province of L'Aquila, transforms into a medieval village for the "Ocre Tempore Medii Aevi" Medieval Festival. For three days, the town's streets host historical lectures on the Norman castle, falconry displays, fire shows, flag-wavers, Renaissance dances, medieval dinners, and guided tours of the Monastery of Santo Spirito. A growing cultural event that blends history, tradition, gastronomy, and entertainment, with mostly free admission, in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains.

The Medieval Festival in Ocre

The "Ocre Tempore Medii Aevi" Medieval Festival is a historical re-enactment held in the village of San Panfilo d'Ocre, a hamlet and municipal seat of the Municipality of Ocre, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Established in 2023, the event is organized by the Municipality of Ocre and continues to grow each year, bringing the atmosphere of the Middle Ages to life in the streets and squares of one of the most charming mountain villages in the L'Aquila area, situated at an altitude of approximately 850 meters.

A village between castle and monastery

Ocre preserves a historical and architectural heritage of great value. The town is dominated by the imposing Norman castle-enclosure, a medieval fortress that once controlled the lower L'Aquila basin, while the territory also features the Monastery of Santo Spirito, a splendid example of medieval religious architecture, and the convent of Sant'Angelo. The festival was created specifically to showcase this extraordinary setting, turning the village of San Panfilo into an open-air stage.

What to expect

The program weaves together cultural education and popular entertainment. Highlights include:

  • Historical lectures on the castle of Ocre and its territory, delivered by scholars from the University of L'Aquila;
  • The "Ocre VR Experience," a 3D virtual journey to discover the medieval fortress;
  • Guided tours of the Norman castle archaeological excavations and the Monastery of Santo Spirito;
  • Falconry shows, fire games, jesters, flag-wavers, and dances from the 14th to 16th centuries;
  • Theatrical performances and traditional games for all ages;
  • The medieval dinner in Piazza San Salvatore, accompanied by roving performers.

Tradition and culture in Abruzzo

More than just a re-enactment, "Ocre Tempore Medii Aevi" has become a defining event for the community of Ocre and the entire L'Aquila area. The festival combines historical research, art, crafts, early music, and traditional gastronomy, offering visitors an immersive experience that tells the story of the medieval past of inland Abruzzo. Admission to the activities is largely free, with the exception of certain initiatives requiring reservations, such as the medieval dinner.
