Lucoli Alto's midsummer festival, blending devotion, brass bands, and folk music

The Madonna del Rosario Festival is one of the most cherished summer traditions in Lucoli, a mountain municipality in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Nestled at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, the area encompasses seventeen hamlets scattered along a narrow Apennine valley. This is precisely why the mid-August festivities are the moment when the community—enriched by many who return to the village for the summer—reunites to celebrate its traditions.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Holy Mass in the Abbey of San Giovanni Battista, an ancient Benedictine complex dating back to the 11th century, when it was refounded by Count Oderisio of the Counts of Marsi. Inside the basilica, a Baroque altar dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario stands as a testament to a devotion rooted in the Lucoli community for centuries. The festival culminates in a procession that winds through the streets of Lucoli Alto and Vado Lucoli, accompanying the sacred image through the village lanes.
The event traditionally spans two days. The first is dedicated to reflection and conviviality: following the religious service at the Abbey, there is an open-air film screening, a perfect opportunity to gather under the summer mountain sky. The second day is the most vibrant, starting with a morning wake-up call from the brass band and continuing into the evening with live music.
More than just a spectacle, the Madonna del Rosario Festival is a genuine portrait of Abruzzo village life: faith, brass bands, games in the square, stalls with local products, and folk music that keeps the mountain villages alive until late at night. For those visiting the L'Aquila hinterland in summer, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an off-the-beaten-path corner of Abruzzo and its warm hospitality.
At this time, the Municipality of Lucoli has not yet published the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Rosario Festival. Based on the tradition of previous years, the festival takes place in mid-August, spread over two days with Holy Mass in the Abbey of San Giovanni Battista, a procession, games, food stalls, and live music. For updated information, we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality.
