On May 13th, the Brecciaio district celebrates its patronal feast with faith, a brass band, and fireworks.
The Our Lady of Fatima Festival is celebrated every year on May 13th in the Brecciaio district, the most populous hamlet of the municipality of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, in the province of Chieti, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzese Sangro Valley. It is the most anticipated event of the year for the small community, which renews a tradition of faith and popular celebration that has been deeply rooted for over forty years, coinciding with the canonical date of the Virgin's first apparition to the shepherd children of Fatima.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, a small sanctuary commissioned by Professor Giacinto Auriti, a renowned jurist from the area who promoted its construction in Brecciaio. The first festival was held on May 13, 1980, with a procession and mass attended by numerous faithful, including a letter sent for the occasion by Pope John Paul II; the bell tower was not yet completed at the time. The church is striking for its simple, modern, A-frame architecture: at its center, an ancient olive tree embedded in the structure serves as the base for the altar, a natural element that makes this place of prayer truly unique.
The festival marks the entire day of May 13th with a mix of religious moments and festive appointments:
Like many district festivals in inland Abruzzo, the one in Brecciaio is much more than a religious observance: it is the day the hamlet rediscovers its identity, with families returning to their roots, food stalls, traditional sweets, and music accompanying the festivities until late at night. The devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, vibrant throughout the peninsula on May 13th, finds one of its most authentic expressions here, in the genuine setting of the Chieti countryside.
The celebrations are concentrated around the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, in the Brecciaio district of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro. The hamlet is easily accessible via the Sangro Valley road network and is served by a large parking area near the sanctuary.
The day of May 13, 2026, in Brecciaio opened at 10:00 AM with morning Mass. At 6:30 PM, the solemn Mass was presided over by Father Giammarco Medoro, followed at 7:00 PM by the traditional procession with the statue of the Madonna, accompanied by the "Luca di Giambattista - Archi" brass band. At 9:00 PM, the pyrotechnic show lit up the district, and at 9:30 PM, the tribute band PRK - Puntoradiokom performed a concert dedicated to Vasco Rossi.
The Brecciaio district is located in the municipality of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro (CH), in the Sangro Valley. By car, it can be reached via local roads connected to the SS652 Fondo Valle Sangro; the nearest motorway exit is Val di Sangro (A14). A large parking area is available near the church.
The festival is celebrated every year on May 13th, the memorial day of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima.
Participation in the celebrations, the procession, and the evening shows is free and open to all.
