The religious and secular festival of the Guarenna district, in the heart of the Teatine Abruzzo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the Guarenna district, a hamlet of the Municipality of Casoli in the province of Chieti, one of the most heartfelt community festivals in the area is renewed every year: the Saint Francis of Assisi Festival. Usually celebrated in the second half of September, the event combines religious and secular dimensions over two days that involve the entire hamlet community and numerous visitors from the nearby Sangro and Aventino valleys.
The heart of the festival is the veneration of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy and a beloved figure of popular spirituality. The religious program includes the celebration of the Solemn Holy Mass and the traditional procession with the statue of the Saint through the streets of the district, accompanied by the faithful and, often, by a marching band. It is a moment of strong participation, in which the small community of Guarenna reaffirms its bond with its Christian roots and the traditions handed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival offers the usual secular program typical of Abruzzese patronal festivals: food stalls with typical products from the Teatine area, evenings of music and entertainment, shows, and moments of gathering for both adults and children. The district comes alive with lights and people, and the convivial atmosphere makes these days an eagerly awaited appointment for the entire community.
Guarenna is a hamlet of the Municipality of Casoli, a village in the Abruzzese hinterland overlooking the Aventino valley, at the foot of the Majella National Park. In this setting of hills, olive groves, and vineyards, district festivals like the one for Saint Francis safeguard the identity of small rural communities in Abruzzo and represent an opportunity to rediscover the hospitality and folk traditions of this land.
Those who attend the Saint Francis of Assisi Festival in Guarenna will find the authenticity of a village fair far from the major tourist circuits: a genuine event, made of faith, good food, and human warmth, in which the community opens its doors to anyone wishing to share its spirit.
The Saint Francis of Assisi Festival in Guarenna, a hamlet of Casoli (CH), is repeated every year in September. For the 2026 edition, the official dates and program have not yet been released. As is customary, the festival should be spread over two days with religious celebrations, a procession, and a secular program featuring music and food stalls. It is recommended to check for updates on the casoli.org portal and the channels of the Festival Committee.
The festival is held in the Guarenna district, a hamlet of the Municipality of Casoli (CH), in Abruzzo, about 6 km from the center of Casoli.
By car: from the A14 motorway, take the Val di Sangro exit, then follow the Fondovalle Sangro (SS652) and provincial roads towards Casoli and Guarenna. The reference railway station is Lanciano, which is then served by bus connections.
For the updated program and details on times, it is recommended to consult the local portal casoli.org and the channels of the district's Festival Committee.
