The grand parade of allegorical floats in the Upper Susa Valley
In the heart of the ski season, the town of Oulx, located in the Upper Susa Valley within the Metropolitan City of Turin, dresses up for its annual Carnival. It is one of those local festivals that brings together residents, holidaymakers, and visitors from neighboring valleys in an explosion of confetti, masks, and cheer. The highlight of the event is the parade of allegorical floats—a true source of local pride—which travels through the town center to the central Piazza Garambois.
The main event is the Grand Parade, where spectacular allegorical floats from both the upper and lower Susa Valley march along Via Monginevro. Alongside the floats, costumed groups and masks, crafted with ingenuity and passion, parade through the streets: every year, the event celebrates the creativity and traditions of local groups, with participation from nearby towns such as Bardonecchia and Salbertrand.
Upon the parade's arrival, Piazza Garambois turns into a true village of fun. Here, you will find music, games, a mechanical bull, and the awards ceremony for the best floats and masks, featuring costume contests for both adults and children. There is no shortage of delicious food, with hot chocolate, arrosticini, goffre, and other specialties to warm up the festive day in the mountains.
The Oulx Carnival is a free, popular event, perfect for those spending their winter holidays in the valley who are looking for an authentic celebration away from the ski slopes. Organized by the Municipality of Oulx with the support of Vallesusa Tesori and local entities, the event confirms the deep bond between the mountain communities of the Upper Susa Valley and their Carnival traditions.
Oulx is located in the Upper Susa Valley, along the SS24 Monginevro state road. It is easily reachable by car via the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway (Oulx exit) and by train, thanks to the Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere station, which is well-connected to Turin.
The parades take place in the center of Oulx, starting from Piazzale della Genzianella, traveling along Via Monginevro, and arriving at Piazza Garambois. The event is traditionally held during the Carnival period, between late February and early March.
