Sant'Ippolito Festival, Patron Saint of Fiumicino

A patronal festival rooted in a unique archaeological site

The Sant'Ippolito Festival is the most significant civil and religious event in the Municipality of Fiumicino, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. It is celebrated every year on October 5th, a fixed date in the liturgical calendar dedicated to Hippolytus, the martyr of Porto, who is venerated as the patron saint of the city and the entire suburbicarian Diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina.

What sets this festival apart from many other Italian patronal feasts is its setting: the early Christian basilica of Sant'Ippolito on Isola Sacra, just a short distance from the Necropolis of Portus. The building, dedicated to the martyr between the late 4th and early 5th centuries, is considered one of the most significant examples of early Christian ecclesiastical architecture. It was unearthed in the early 1970s, not far from the Fiumicino canal, the ancient Fossa Traiana.

The Sant'Ippolito complex

The monumental complex, now managed by the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park, includes several elements worth exploring before participating in the festivities:

• the early Christian basilica, which housed the martyr's remains inside a sarcophagus bearing his name, discovered during excavations;

• the Antiquarium, which displays inscriptions, marble architectural decorations, and the ciborium that monumentalized the basilica's altar in the 9th century.

How the day unfolds

The heart of the festival is the procession of the saint's relics, which travels through the Isola Sacra district in the late afternoon, connecting the parish of Santa Maria Madre della Divina Provvidenza to the basilica area. The procession is led by the banners of the Municipality and the Pro Loco and is accompanied by the Fiumicino Pro Loco marching band, an essential element of this tradition.

This is followed by a solemn open-air mass, celebrated on the square in front of the basilica by the Bishop of the Diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina, in the presence of local clergy and city authorities. The archaeological backdrop, with the sun setting over the ancient walls, gives the celebration an atmosphere that the locals consider truly unique.

At the end of the religious ceremony, the Agro Isola Sacra association traditionally offers sandwiches, drinks, and sweets to all attendees: a simple, free, and highly participatory social moment that concludes the day in the parish grounds. In some years, the festival has been enriched by a dessert competition open to home baking enthusiasts, with an awards ceremony after the mass, and extraordinary openings of the frescoed chapel and the Antiquarium.

Those who arrive in Fiumicino thinking only of the airport will discover a different city: a seaside town with a long history, rooted in the imperial port of Rome.
