The Partenio village rings in the holidays with a church concert and the lighting of the Christmas tree

There are towns where Christmas arrives with shop windows, and others where it arrives on a shared date. Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants clinging to the slopes of Mount Partenio in the province of Avellino, belongs to the latter category. On the first Sunday of December, the village gathers for an afternoon that blends music and lights, marking the official start of the festivities. It is not a monumental event, and that is precisely why it works: it is a community recognizing itself in its historic center, its parish church, and the square in front of their homes.
The heart of the event is the Christmas concert held in the late afternoon in the Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, the town's main place of worship, dedicated to its two patron saints and overlooking the ancient core of the village. The intimate acoustics of the nave and the chosen time—when it is already dark outside—give the performance an intimate character, quite different from a theater concert. In the 2025 edition, the musical program was entrusted to a harp and violin duo, a chamber ensemble particularly well-suited to the Christmas repertoire, ranging from traditional carols to classical pieces.
At the end of the concert, the audience exits the church and the evening continues outdoors with the lighting of the Christmas tree: the most anticipated moment, which children await with a countdown, symbolically marking the town's entry into the holiday season. The lights remain on throughout the month, accompanying the village's other Christmas events.
The initiative is relatively young but has already established continuity: the December 7, 2025 event marked the eighth edition of the village's Christmas celebrations. Over the years, the event has changed its title several times—previously called "Natale con noi..." and "Natale Insieme"—while maintaining the same underlying formula: a widespread calendar of initiatives starting in early December and accompanying the town until Epiphany, with markets, shows for children, and entertainment.
The town is one of the gateways to the Partenio Regional Park and a classic stop along the road that climbs to the Sanctuary of Montevergine, one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites in Campania. Its gastronomic identity is linked to the castagna del prete (priest's chestnut), a chestnut dried and smoked according to a traditional process, celebrated in autumn with a dedicated festival. In winter, the village shows its most cozy side: narrow streets, mountain air, and a historic center that lends itself perfectly to holiday lights.
The tree lighting is not an isolated event. Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo participates alongside Summonte and Sant'Angelo a Scala in the "Natale ai Borghi del Partenio" circuit, promoted by the three municipalities with the GAL Partenio: a December route that rotates through the three towns with Christmas markets, local product stands, food stalls, entertainment, and a Santa Claus village. Those arriving in Irpinia during that period can easily build a multi-day itinerary.
Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo is a handful of kilometers from Avellino and less than an hour from Naples: the distance is minimal, but the change of scale is stark. In one afternoon, you move from the city to the silence of the mountains, with a concert in a village church and a tree lighting up in the square among people who know each other by name. It is the kind of Christmas not found in large shopping malls and which, for many, remains the most authentic.
As of the update of this page, the Municipality of Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo has not yet released the 2026 Christmas calendar: therefore, neither the exact date nor the names of the artists expected for the opening concert are available.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect the event to take place in the first days of December, with the concert in the late afternoon in the Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo followed by the lighting of the tree in the center of the village, and that it will be part of a broader program of initiatives accompanying the town until Epiphany.
For updated information, it is best to contact the Municipality directly (tel. +39 0825 691209) or consult official channels. This page will be updated as soon as the official program is published.
By car: from Avellino, you can reach Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo in about 15 minutes by following the road to Montevergine; from Naples, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway to the Avellino Ovest exit, then continue towards Mercogliano-Ospedaletto. By train: the reference station is Avellino, connected by local bus lines. By plane: the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, about an hour away by road.
The historic center is compact and parking areas are limited: it is best to leave the car in the spaces along the main road and reach the church and square on foot.
