The Piedmont organ festival stops at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta
Organalia is one of the longest-running and most acclaimed organ festivals in Piedmont. Founded in 2002, it reaches its 25th edition in 2026. Promoted by the Organalia Cultural Association of Chivasso, the event aims to foster musical culture and preserve the region's historic organs. As a traveling festival, it visits numerous churches and basilicas throughout the Turin area, the Canavese, and the Lanzo Valleys each year, with special concerts in other Piedmontese provinces, including the municipality of Vigliano Biellese in the Province of Biella.
In Vigliano Biellese, the concert is held in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses a fine 2007 Dell'Orto e Lanzini organ. Although a modern instrument, it is of exceptional tonal quality and is showcased through programs tailored by the performers. The Municipality of Vigliano Biellese has collaborated with the festival organizers for years, reflecting a strong bond between the local administration and this high-profile cultural event.
The organ bench is occupied by national and international-level organists. In the 2026 edition, the Vigliano stop featured Gianluca Cagnani, professor of Organ and Organ Improvisation at the "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory in Turin, with a program designed to highlight the instrument's sonic capabilities. The concerts, typically held in the evening, offer a precious opportunity to hear organ repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary improvisation.
Organalia is more than just a concert season; it is a project dedicated to enhancing Piedmont's organ heritage, supported by the Piedmont Region, the Metropolitan City of Turin, and, for the Biella stop, with the patronage of the Province of Biella and the support of the Municipality of Vigliano Biellese. Each concert is also an occasion to rediscover the churches hosting the instruments, in a dialogue between music, architecture, and popular devotion.
The concert was held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 9:00 PM in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The featured performer was Gianluca Cagnani, professor of Organ and Organ Improvisation at the "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory in Turin, who highlighted the tonal range of the 2007 Dell'Orto e Lanzini organ.
The Vigliano stop was part of the "From Turin towards the Ciriacese and Canavese areas" series (May 2 - July 5, 2026), one of the two main routes of the 25th edition of Organalia. The initiative took place under the patronage of the Piedmont Region and the Province of Biella, with the support of the Municipality of Vigliano Biellese.
