The 25 April road race in Sesto Fiorentino, where sport meets remembrance
The Oliviero Frosali Trophy – Siro Magni Memorial is one of the most deeply rooted road-running events in the Florence area. It is held every year on 25 April, Liberation Day, in Sesto Fiorentino, a major town in the northern belt of Florence, in Tuscany. Far more than a simple footrace, the event is a heartfelt occasion for the community, where sport and historical memory come together on a morning of popular celebration.
The event is named after two figures deeply connected to the area. Oliviero Frosali is remembered as a symbol of anti-fascism in Sesto, tragically killed before the eyes of his daughter, who later became the wife of Siro Magni. The Siro Magni Memorial honours the founder of the Gruppo Sportivo Ausonia, established in 1974. Running on 25 April thus takes on a symbolic value: the race becomes a tribute to the Liberation and to the values of freedom that define the day. Fittingly, in years past President Sandro Pertini sent telegrams of greeting to the organisers.
The sporting programme is designed for athletes of every level and for families:
Behind the event is G.S. Ausonia ASD, a club founded in 1974 by Sirio Magni together with Vincenzo Franceschini, Silvano Gambacciani, Bruno Sarti and Romano Zucca. For more than fifty years, Ausonia has been a solid and passionate force in Tuscan road running. The race is part of the UISP Florence calendar and counts towards the UISP "Camangi" and "Under 30" trophies, as well as the "Fratres" trophy.
Each edition draws around three hundred and fifty participants, from competitive athletes to amateurs. The meeting point is the Circolo Rinascita at via Matteotti 18, while the start is given from Piazza Ginori, in the heart of town. Prizes are generous, with awards for the leading men's and women's categories and a well-stocked race pack for all participants. It is a way to spend the morning of 25 April in the name of sport, conviviality and remembrance, in the heart of the province of Florence.
The 52nd edition of the Oliviero Frosali Trophy, paired with the 12th Siro Magni Memorial, confirmed the 25 April fixture in Sesto Fiorentino. The meeting point was set at the Circolo Rinascita (via Matteotti 18) from 7:30 am, with the start at 9:00 am from Piazza Ginori.
Three options were on offer: the 14 km competitive race on the route introduced the previous year, between old town and hills, the 14 km non-competitive run and the 5 km fun run for families and walkers. The event counted towards the UISP "Camangi", "Under 30" and "Fratres" trophies.
