The international marathon of Florence, set amidst art, history, and the Renaissance
The Estra Florence Marathon is one of the most anticipated events on the Italian and international running calendar. Every year, on the last Sunday of November, the historic center of Florence (Province of Florence, Tuscany) transforms into an open-air stage for thousands of marathoners arriving from all over the globe. Running these 42.195 km means traversing one of the most extraordinary artistic heritages on the planet, with the Brunelleschi dome in the background and Renaissance masterpieces marking every kilometer.
The start is set in Piazza del Duomo, in the shadow of Santa Maria del Fiore and Giotto's Campanile. From here, the route guides runners along the city center streets, through Piazza San Marco, Parco delle Cascine, the Lungarni along the Arno river, the iconic Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Santa Croce, and Piazza della Signoria, before finishing near Piazza San Giovanni. It is a flat and fast course, suitable both for those aiming for a personal best and those running the classic distance for the first time.
With over ten thousand finishers and athletes from more than a hundred nations, the Florence Marathon confirms its status as one of Italy's most popular marathons. Alongside the main race, the 10K Florence Marathon takes place—a competitive ten-kilometer event that shares the festive atmosphere and much of the same spectacular urban scenery. The weekend is rounded out by the Marathon Village Expo, the meeting point for bib collection, and numerous initiatives dedicated to runners and their families.
The Florence Marathon is not just a sporting challenge: it is a grand public celebration that involves the entire city. Along the course, musical groups, cheering crowds, and volunteers provide energy, while the organization takes care of every detail, including refreshment stations, medical assistance, and pacers to help runners reach their goals. It is the perfect opportunity to combine a passion for running with the discovery of one of the world's most beautiful cities.
The 42nd Estra Florence Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, November 29, 2026. The 42.195 km marathon starts from Piazza del Duomo and crosses the heart of the Florentine Renaissance, while the competitive 10K Florence Marathon race takes place on the same day. Registration for the 2026 edition is officially open.
Flat and fast route entirely within the historic center of Florence. Start from Piazza del Duomo, passing through Via Cavour and Piazza San Marco, crossing Parco delle Cascine, the Lungarni, and the Ponte Vecchio, passing by Piazza Santa Croce and Piazza della Signoria, with the finish near Piazza San Giovanni (Via dei Pecori). Refreshment stations every 5 km, medical assistance along the entire route, and pacers for different target times.
In the days leading up to the race, the Marathon Village/Expo is open for bib collection and stands dedicated to the world of running. The detailed weekend program and Expo hours are published on the official website firenzemarathon.it.
Florence is easily accessible by train, arriving at the Santa Maria Novella station, just a few minutes' walk from Piazza del Duomo. By car, exit the A1 motorway (Florence North or Florence South exits); on race days, the center is largely closed to traffic, so using park-and-ride facilities and public transport is recommended. Florence-Peretola Airport is just a few kilometers from the city center.
Registration is handled online via the ENDU platform (endu.net). Bib collection takes place at the Marathon Village/Expo in the days leading up to the race. For information: [email protected].
Book your accommodation well in advance: on the last Sunday of November, the city is usually fully booked. Arrive at the start area with plenty of time for bag drop-off and warm-ups.
