Floral carpets and ephemeral art along Via Ziino in the seaside village of the Gulf of Tindari
The Oliveri Flower Festival is one of the most cherished events in the spring calendar of this small seaside village overlooking the Gulf of Tindari, in the province of Messina. Every year, the central Via Ziino is transformed into a long carpet of petals and ephemeral art, the result of the collective creativity of local volunteers, young people, and associations. These floral works, patiently crafted over entire days, tell stories of faith, peace, and community life.
The initiative is promoted and coordinated by the Christian Workers Movement (MCL) of Oliveri, with the support of numerous local associations and youth groups. The festival is more than just a visual spectacle; it is a moment of togetherness that involves the entire citizenry in creating the floral displays, from gathering and selecting petals to laying them on the street. In recent years, the event has taken on a powerful symbolic value: the 2025 edition, titled "Unarmed and Disarming Peace," was conceived as a silent cry against war and division, a journey of ephemeral art, faith, and shared reflection.
The setting is Oliveri, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina nestled at the foot of the Tindari promontory, between the Marinello Lakes Nature Reserve, the ancient tuna fishery, and the Arab-origin castle. The festival is part of a broader calendar of spring and summer events that the municipality dedicates to off-season tourism, aiming to bring the village to life not only in the summer months but throughout the year.
The festival generally takes place in June, often coinciding with the Corpus Domini celebrations, along Via Ziino in the center of Oliveri. Admission is free, and the event is open to residents and visitors, who can admire the floral carpets and watch the various stages of their creation.
The 2026 edition of the Oliveri Flower Festival took place on June 6 and 7 along Via Ziino, in the heart of the village. As every year, the event transformed the street into a stunning carpet of art and color, the result of the collective participation and creativity of local volunteers and associations. The event was part of a calendar of spring and summer initiatives promoted by the municipal administration led by Mayor Francesco Iarrera, designed to showcase the area and demonstrate that Oliveri is a vibrant place all year round, not just during the summer season.
Alongside the Flower Festival, the 2026 program offered numerous initiatives spanning culture, music, sports, and maritime traditions, enlivening Oliveri from May to June.
