The Feast of Our Lady of Providence in the village of Fantina

The Feast of Maria SS. della Provvidenza is one of the most cherished religious celebrations for the community of Fantina, a village in the municipality of Fondachelli-Fantina, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Nestled at an altitude of over six hundred meters, along the Flascio river and near the Nebrodi Park, this small mountain hamlet experiences the Feast of Our Lady of Providence as a moment of strong collective identity, where popular faith and community roots intertwine.
At the heart of the festival is the wooden statue of the Madonna della Provvidenza, kept in the parish church of the same name in Fantina, in Piazza dei Garibaldini. For the occasion, the statue is adorned with gold donated by the faithful over the years, a tangible sign of a devotion passed down from generation to generation. The most solemn moment is the procession: the statue travels through the small streets of the town, followed by a large crowd, while a sense of entrustment to Providence accompanies the entire duration of the festivities.
The event is part of the Marian calendar linked to the figure of Maria Assunta della Provvidenza and is traditionally celebrated on September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, with Eucharistic celebrations and moments of community prayer. The parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Provvidenza, is part of the Diocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.
Fantina retains the charm of the small towns in the Messina hinterland: a close-knit community, guardian of ancient traditions and a historical heritage that also includes the memory of the Garibaldini, to whom the square housing the church is dedicated. Participating in the festival means discovering an authentic corner of mountain Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits, where the patronal feast remains a deeply popular and well-attended event.
